There's a recurring theme in this text about what you wear and what you've lost, and it's not accidental. Su Hanchu's line about being "practically barefoot now and not afraid of those wearing shoes" is the thesis statement for the entire story. The barefoot person has nothing left to lose, which makes them the most dangerous person in the room. The people wearing shoes—the officials, the aristocrats, the Chen Family—those are the ones who have something to protect, something to fear. Then there's the clothing motif. Su Yangshi wearing clothes made from fabric her sister-in-law gave her, now turning around and insulting the family that provided them. Chen Siyu dressed as a proper young lady but behaving like someone from a brothel. Su Hanchu hiding medicine and silver inside Jun Moye's long gown, wrapping it in fabric that was meant for display but is now used for survival. Clothes in this story are never just clothes—they're status, they're deception, they're practical tools. The exile itself is a powerful symbol. These people went from the height of power—Princess Consort Qin, a general's household—to walking hundreds of miles with nothing. The transformation from palace life to dirt roads is the physical manifestation of the theme: nothing lasts, loyalty is conditional, and the only thing you truly control is how you respond when everything is taken from you. Su Hanchu's response is to fight, to protect her new family, to use her military knowledge to survive. The original owner might have been a fragile palace lady, but Su Hanchu is rewriting that destiny with every slap she delivers and every ounce of silver she shares.
Good story , but to slow ...️ I’m up till date on this story but to be honest it’s tiring ... . I love the writers way of writing ,that’s what’s making me want to keep on reading ... I’ve been following dis book for 3 months, I love your work they are all ...amazing but this book is just to slow .

A must-read...An intriguing story
If "Butterfly and Whale" was a more romantic and idealistic take on tragedy (which I still enjoy, by the way), then this novel offers a more grounded, real-life perspective on bittersweet endings.
It's truly unfortunate, but sometimes you meet someone at the wrong place and time.
I wasn't expecting much from a 10-chapter bittersweet ending tragedy, but it managed to bring a tear to my eye.
I absolutely adored it! The couple was fantastic, and it was an incredibly entertaining read. I've revisited it multiple times. The only downside is that it had to come to an end. I highly endorse it and would love to see this story translated into a television series. In my mind, Li imagined Yang Yang as Song Yan and Dilraba Dilmurat as Wen Li - what a brilliant casting choice!
