I loved this book from beginning to end. The character development, the plots twist and turns, and the characters themselves. Something different and beautifully written; defined worth the read. You won’t regret it.

Can we appreciate how Pei Du speaks? The man has ZERO filter and I respect it. Let me just drop some quotes: "Leave them there." — when told someone brought him food. Not even looking up from his writing. The audacity. "If you try to brush me off again by saying it was merely because of my grandmother's kindness, don't blame me for showing no mercy." — He's interrogating a girl who could be executed for existing and he's treating her like a suspect in a case. Which, honestly, fair, he IS the Vice Minister of Justice. And Xie Zhi's responses are so perfectly meek but there's this UNDERCURRENT of steel. When she says "Yes, my lord" repeatedly, it doesn't read as weakness—it reads as someone who has learned that survival means not giving them a reason. The text says her "gaze remained unwavering" even while being pinned down and forced to eat papers. That's not submission. That's calculated endurance. The Old Madam's voice is also great—warm, meddling, completely oblivious. "Don't overthink it. He hasn't taken a wife yet, so naturally he can't openly keep a woman in his chambers." Ma'am, you are describing exactly the situation and you think you're being reassuring? And Yuyang's dialogue is perfectly entitled. "You seduced my Third Brother to get into the Marquis's residence. When he was assigned elsewhere, you wormed your way into Grandmother's courtyard instead." The specificity of her accusations tells us so much about how these girls view Xie Zhi—not as a person but as a threat to their social position.
When is a Anthony going to find out he is been drugged, you called him powerful papa and yet no one has noticed Mia drugging him. Or even catch her calling Bianca. Getting Bianca’s phone record as he always does to Anne will solve this problem.Mia has been getting away with so much for so long.
