Great story! Well worth the read!
Okay first of all—Shen Sichen's voice. This man speaks like a villain who read a villain handbook and then decided to go above and beyond. His dialogue is so delightfully, cartoonishly evil that I kept wanting to throw things at the page. "For the sake of the years of affection between us, I have come to see you off on your final journey." Affection. He uses the word AFFECTION while standing over a woman whose hands have been severed. And then he just casually drops the news about her entire family being executed like he's ordering takeout. "Miss Mu, General Mu and the several madams were executed at noon today. If you depart now, you might still catch up with them. You can keep each other company on the road to the Yellow Springs, so you won't be lonely in the afterlife." The casualness is what makes it work. He's not cackling. He's not dramatic. He's almost bored. And that's scarier than any villain monologue. His line "When the rabbits are caught, the hounds are cooked… When the birds are gone, the bow is hidden" is the kind of quote I would screenshot and send to my book group chat at 2 AM. It's classical, it's cruel, and it perfectly captures his philosophy. Then there's Shen Junlin, and his voice is completely different. Where Shen Sichen is cold and calculated, Shen Junlin is raw and volatile. "Mu Nanyin, I'll say it one more time. With the three matchmakers and six betrothal gifts, the phoenix crown and ceremonial robes, even if you refused to bow during the ceremony, this marriage is sealed. You belong to me for the rest of your life." That's not just dialogue—that's a threat wrapped in legal terminology. He's reminding her that the Emperor himself bestowed this marriage, that there's no escape. And his voice shifts throughout the chapter in a way that feels incredibly natural. He goes from furious to confused to self-mocking to… something else when she cries. The line "What new trick are you trying to pull?" shows his deep-seated distrust, but then when she actually breaks down and apologizes, his response is quieter, more uncertain. That shift in tone tells us everything about a man who has been hurt repeatedly and has no framework for believing he's being treated fairly now. The dialogue between these two men, even though they're never in the same scene, feels like a constant battle. One speaks in polished cruelty, the other in raw possession. Both are dangerous in completely different ways, and the author gives each a voice so distinct you could tell them apart blindfolded.
It became so boring after the second arc. Although each arc has a different theme, the excessive amount of details makes me skip paragraphs after paragraphs. The main character (MC) is a Mary Sue who always wins.
In the fourth arc, she became an embroidery master in less than a year. At the same time, she did some pretty heavy labor, like chopping wood planks and making leather armor, which could ruin her hands and make them too rough for the fine embroidery and delicate fabrics. But who cares, she's the MC!
And of course, the antagonist female character always loses. This is ridiculous, especially in the empress dress chapter when she made a short dress for the coronation. I can't believe it actually.
The concept is intriguing, but there's a lack of clarity on the cultivation system. The protagonist acquired "months of cultivation," yet the reader has no understanding of its impact on their progress or the requirements for breaking through. It feels odd to be in a world centered around cultivation without any detailed explanation of its workings.
So what? You still have to turn your brain off in the first 300-400 chapters to enjoy it, just because the mc is ur type doesn’t change the fact that the translator f*ck*d it up coupled with the obvious plot holes.
I still think it’s a good novel with great potential and I absolutely enjoyed reading the last few hundred chapters.
