He's a complete sorry as* excuse for a mate. He pretty much let everyone, especially women bully his fated mate. I don't care what he promised a dead person, he should have never let Daphne get away with treating his mate like she's done or taken her side repeatedly.
Okay so I need to talk about this LORE DROP in Chapter 10 because my jaw literally hit the floor. Up until that point, I was reading this as a sweet high school crush story—Xie Wenxing has a crush on the quiet hot guy, he's nervous, he's drafting pursuit plans on A4 paper, classic rom-com setup right? Then Luo Yinyin's inner monologue hits and suddenly we're in a completely different genre. "All mission takers were sent into this world by the main god's systems to complete character-targeting missions." Wait, what. So this whole world has SYSTEMS? There are multiple people here playing roles like some kind of cosmic game? And if they fail, they DIE? That changes EVERYTHING. This recontextualizes the entire story. Luo Yinyin isn't just a jealous girl next door—she's a COMPETITOR. She's been trying to win Xu Huai'an's favor for two months, grinding from 1 to 5 points, and now this transfer student shows up and immediately catches Xu Huai'an's attention. Of COURSE she suspects he's a mission taker using some "Heartthrob" item. The irony is delicious because Xie Wenxing isn't a mission taker at all—he's genuinely, awkwardly, first-time-in-love in love. He's not playing a game, he's just a kid who can't stop thinking about someone. The tension between these two threads is what makes this chapter so good. On one level, it's a fluffy crush story. On another level, it's a survival game where Luo Yinyin is actively plotting against someone who has no idea the rules exist. And the worst part? Xu Huai'an knows. He kicked Zhou Yuan twice to make him help Xie Wenxing. He's been watching. He's been interested. Is he also a mission taker? The text doesn't say, but now I'm wondering about EVERYONE. The pacing here is masterful too. The author lets us settle into the romantic comedy rhythm—Xie Wenxing's nervousness, the classroom scene, the chair screeching—then SMASHES it with the mission taker reveal right as Xie Wenxing is about to make his move. It's like the ground opens up beneath him and the reader at the same time.
I love the story so much that I've re-read everything so far. It would be nicer if we got more chapters on a regular basis.
