The character is depicted as拥有超人的意志，致力于一个他愿意为之付出生命的事业。However, instead of displaying a range of emotions, he spends nearly all his time wallowing in self-pity. This constant sadness feels forced, as if a machine designed solely to express sorrow without any variation in emotions. It's unrealistic that someone with his detachment would not develop emotional numbness under such circumstances, yet the narrative doesn't reflect that. His lack of empathy is striking.
The supporting female characters follow a similar pattern, expressing remorse and pity for him, while the secondary characters are often so one-dimensional that they border on caricatures, like the "perverted aristocrat," the "greedy pope," or the omnipresent "cowardly bystanders." Overall, the book struggles to evoke any genuine emotional connection or investment from the reader.
