I need to talk about Fenfen because this character absolutely stole my heart and I'm not even mad about it. On the surface, Fenfen is the supportive best friend. She helps Yan Qing shop, she buys the house, she makes lists. But read between the lines and this woman is grieving while standing right next to the person she's grieving FROM. Every scene with Fenfen has this double meaning layer that just DESTROYS me. When she says "I was planning to buy a house anyway—might as well buy yours. I really love your interior design," that's not just about real estate. That's a woman finding any excuse to keep her friend's life connected to this world. And the house? It's not an investment. It's a TIME CAPSULE. A place that waits. "If you sell it, I'd actually feel reluctant. And what if one day you come back? At least you'll still have a home." SHE KNEW. She knew Yan Qing wasn't coming back and she was already preparing for a future where she'd have to visit an empty house. The most devastating moment for me is Chapter 8 when Fenfen sneakily stuffs two boxes into Yan Qing's luggage and won't say what they are. What is she thinking? Is she preparing Yan Qing for something? Is she saying something she can't say out loud? The mystery of those boxes haunts me. And then the crayfish scene. The beer. The tears mixed with alcohol. Fenfen's line "Maybe one day I'll transmigrate too, and I'll come find you" — is that hope? Is it desperation? Or is it the author planting a seed for later? I'm already obsessed with how this friendship will be remembered in the forest. Yan Qing is alone now but Fenfen is everywhere in her preparations.
I love this book very much. high 5 to this great author. but let me tell y'all I've never seen such a shameless jabal/ homewrecker like that lol. do u believe that there are actually women like Raine who don't know their place and keep on destroying other people's marriages smh.
