The dialogue in this section is deceptively simple because on the surface it's just a three-year-old's perspective, but the SUBTEXT is where it all lives. Yan Tingbai pulling out that rattle drum and saying 'Sister Yuan, come here quickly. Look what your father brought for you'—this man is genuinely trying. He was searching for doctors all day, considered Taoist priests and Buddhist monks, and he's being affectionate in his own slightly unreliable way. The narrative voice describing him as 'whimsical' but clearly loving is so well done. And then there's Wang Chenbi's maid bringing fresh fruit to a刚刚-recovered child. The text explicitly tells us this is a subtle move—Wang Chenbi doesn't want Swallow Holding Branch near her because she's pregnant and worried about infection—but the politeness on the surface makes it feel almost natural. That's the genius of the dialogue here. Everyone is performing. Madam Wang's 'Sister Yuan, you've fully recovered' is directed at Madam Bai, not the child. Yan Jingzheng and Wang Chenbi 'simultaneously revealed gentle smiles' when Swallow Holding Branch looks at them. These two dragons beget dragons and even before they had power they knew how to pretend. The narrative voice carrying Swallow Holding Branch's ancient resentment inside a child's body creates this incredible tension in every exchange.
perfectly perfect fine
great book but should be a multi series instead of a over chaptered book. it kills the feeling of wanting to finish.
