The book is very good. It’s intriguing, minor errors. It’s spicy and pulls you in. I do feel the ending was very rushed and I would have like more wrap up with the characters but there is a sequel that is starting got very good.
I have read the first books of this series as well as Caged between the beta and alpha and have really enjoyed them all I like the creative mind of Moonlight Muse! Thank you for the series looking forward to reading next book of this series.

Okay, so let me just say this plot twist had me absolutely losing it. Xiao Mo not only refuses to show up to his own engagement meeting but he deliberately uses Xu Shuyao as a human messenger to spread the word. Think about how many layers of manipulation are happening here. He avoids the marriage, makes Xu Shuyao the target of suspicion, AND creates an excuse that sounds perfectly reasonable while everyone in the room knows exactly what's going on. The Old Madam figures it out immediately—'He was deliberately avoiding the match'—and honestly, that line hit me like a truck. But the real plot bomb drops in Chapter 21 when Xiao Mo reveals to his grandmother that the Shen family has been secretly hoping for a royal marriage all along. The Empress gave them hope! That completely reframes everything. The Shen family wasn't being patient—they were biding their time for a better offer. And Xiao Mo? He already knew this and just sat there letting his grandmother try to negotiate. The plot structure here is brilliant because every chapter peels back another layer of political maneuvering. Chapter 18 sets up the public confrontation, Chapter 19 shows the fallout from every angle, Chapter 20 has the Old Madam quietly investigating, and Chapter 21 delivers the revelation that changes everything. The narrative builds this slow-burn tension where we're watching characters navigate a minefield of social expectations, and the author never lets us forget that every word spoken in that hall carries weight far beyond its surface meaning.

Let me walk through how the author builds this: It starts almost comically—the aunt can't sleep over a blind date rejection, writes a letter at midnight, cleans the house at dawn. This is domestic drama, the kind of thing that feels almost mundane. Zhang Wenyue is basically a classic meddling auntie, and there's a dark humor to her internal monologue about the carp leaping over the dragon gate. Then we cut to Lin Aiyun in the alley, and the tone shifts. Niu Wenshan returns her lunchbox—but how did he know she had one? That single detail changes everything. The reader goes from 'oh this is a family drama' to 'wait, something is wrong here' in about three sentences. The stalking sequence that follows is where the pacing really shines. It's not one big scary event—it's the slow accumulation of wrong feelings. The third day. The prickling on her neck. Turning around and seeing nothing. This is how real fear works, and the author understands that. Each small moment adds weight until by the time Lin Aiyun is having full panic attacks, we've earned it. The transition to Liu Hui's scene works because it gives us a release valve—Lin Aiyun finally tells someone, the tension breaks a little, and we get that warm handkerchief moment. But then the section ends on a slightly unsettling note with Lin Aiyun weaving a lie about where she saw the fabric. The author won't let us fully relax. The structure here is basically: setup → escalation → partial release → new question. That's why I couldn't stop reading.

I loved it! The storyline was amazing despite some issues with what I believe to be translation.
