This batch is a pacing masterpiece and I need to unpack why. It opens with what feels like a casual conversation—Eighteenth Lady trying to find an escort, Xu Jichun rejecting candidates with deadpan humor. 'Helan Wang? You just said yesterday that he likes men. I'm worried about my safety.' This is light, almost sitcom-like. And then—bam—we're at a mortuary looking at mutilated corpses. The transition is so smooth you don't even notice the tonal shift until you're already deep in autopsy details. That's skilled pacing. The author doesn't warn you; they just glide from comedy to horror and you're along for the ride. Then comes the investigation sequence, which could easily drag. But the author keeps it moving by layering revelations: no resistance wounds → poisoned tea → cinnabar in the boy's system → talisman fragments → ritual services → Taomu Village. Each clue is a small beat that propels them forward. By the time Xu Jichun climbs out the window saying 'Let's go,' you're already running with him. The middle section—the walk to Peachwood Village, the encounter with the villager, the backstory about the court's reaction—this is where pacing could falter. But the author uses the villager's dialogue to deliver exposition naturally. We learn about the Ministry of Justice taking over, about Wu Feijue arriving, about the Emperor's fury—all through a farmer who overheard officials complaining. Clever. No info-dump, just gossip filtering down from the powerful to the powerless. And then Lu Xiuyan appears. Just as Eighteenth Lady is about to rejoin Xu Jichun, another man 'suddenly appeared before him, bringing a gust of wind with him.' The entrance is sudden, almost theatrical, and it shifts the dynamic immediately. The shared glance between Xu Jichun and Lu Xiuyan, the embarrassed looking-away—it's a tiny moment but it changes the entire energy of the scene. The batch ends with Qin Caifan sobbing behind a screen. After all the investigation, the corpses, the court politics—we end on pure emotion. A young woman, isolated, grieving, possibly hiding something. The pacing here is deliberate: slow it down, let the silence between words speak. What I love most is that the author never lets any single tone dominate. Comedy, horror, investigation, romance, grief—they're all woven together like threads in a tapestry. By the time you finish, you've felt everything.

Honestly, this novel is a first for me. Well, in terms of Modern Fantasy. Its quite well made compared to other CN, with really little racism or excessive nationalism. Hmmmm... if I had to choose, maybe House of Horrors, but then again I havent read it since Im also scared by what my friends told me about ,"that reading it in the dead night would make you hypersensitive to things"
