This was so not expected when i started reading. It was better than i ever could have hoped. Now starting book 2.
The pacing in these chapters is absolutely relentless in the best way. You've got the system mission triggering right when Xin Ling lets her guard down, then immediate cut to Cen Yinian's two-hour bath ordeal that's described with this breathless, aching intensity, then back to Xin Ling who has no idea any of this is happening. The chapter transitions are so sharp — one moment she's eating dinner with a seemingly nice neighbor, the next she's being carried unconscious to his bed while he clears demonic energy from her wounds. Then the feather scene spans across both their perspectives simultaneously, which is such a clever structural choice. And the coffee delivery scene? Perfect comedic timing with Tang Yue bursting in at the worst possible moment. The author knows exactly when to slow down (the feather Stroking, the bath scene) and when to accelerate (the mission triggers, the arguments). By chapter 7 we're already at a new cliffhanger with Cen Yuyan calling at midnight saying he's not feeling well, and Xin Ling — sweet, naive Xin Ling — can't bring herself to ignore him. The trap is closing and I am HERE for it.

this book is amazing as are the other 2 in the series. kudos to Kat Thomas absolutely brilliant story and writing, flipping between max and Deanna perspectives and view points
