The pacing in these chapters is absolutely relentless and I have no complaints. Let me walk through how the author builds tension like a master. We open with Shen Lingxi COLLAPSING in the bathroom. Immediate crisis. Doctor comes out with the most awkward question imaginable—did you two have sex in there? The humor here is dark but it works because it breaks the tension just enough before slamming it back down. Then Fu Jinglan's reaction—'I didn't touch her' said with what the narration literally calls 'grievance'—and we're already laughing and worried at the same time. Two hours later, he's in a suit holding a video meeting. The transition from domestic crisis to political power move is seamless. Tan Zongxing's introduction is perfect worldbuilding that doesn't feel like info-dumping because it's woven into the meeting naturally. And Fu Jinglan keeps glancing at the door—his mind is clearly elsewhere. Then the doctor delivers the bomb: craniotomy ten years ago, amnesia, emotional fluctuations can cause fainting. The stakes just went from 'she's sick' to 'she has a mysterious medical past.' And THEN Fu Jinglan goes to her bedside, the delirium scene happens, and he's already suspecting she might be Xiaosi. By the time we get to the childhood photo and the fashion show video, I was COMPLETELY hooked. The chapter ending with the video of 16-year-old Shen Lingxi as the 'Spring Sprite'—confident, beautiful, radiant under those lights—is a perfect pivot. It reframes everything we thought we knew about her fragility. She's not just a delicate flower; she has a whole life we haven't seen yet. And Fu Jinglan watching it with a dark expression? Chef's kiss.
In truth, this review is rather self-centric. For me, this is a deeply poignant and heart-wrenching tale. If you choose to read it, be aware that it delves into themes of rape and unrequited love intertwined with loss. My intention in penning this review is to caution those seeking a lighthearted story, as this one carries heavy emotional weight. It's certainly not a recommendation for fans of sweeter narratives. The impact of this story might linger in my thoughts for days to come.
