You know all of this abuse, rape & beating is alright since ML is rich & handsome if he would have been a poor fat big bellied man Bella would have ran for the hills. But unfortunately Rape & hitting women is not redeemable for me no matter how \\"irresistible\\" & \\"handsome\\" he is.

Can we talk about how EVERY character in this book speaks like a real human being who has something to hide? Shen Jingshu's dialogue is fascinating because on the surface she sounds like a proper noble lady—'Mother, don't speak of it!'—but then she cracks and it's just raw, ugly, honest: 'If he won't marry me, then I won't marry him. The betrothal was originally my younger sister's. I only took her place to fulfill it.' The way she says 'to fulfill it' like it's a chore, like her entire existence is a task to be completed. And Madam Ruan's response—'Look at you—who was it just now saying the marriage should be abandoned?'—that playful pinch of the nose, that's a mother who knows her daughter is performing even in grief. Xiao Mo's dialogue is basically nonexistent and that's THE POINT. He says three things in Chapter 17: 'Understood. You may go.' 'You're from the second branch? Heading into Songhe Hall?' 'Then tell my mother I've left. The emperor has summoned me to the palace—I'll return tonight.' Three sentences. The first is bureaucratic. The second is... what? Testing her? And the third is a blatant lie delivered with the casual confidence of a man who has never been caught lying before. The fact that he doesn't even try to sound convincing is almost more telling. Xu Shuyao's voice is my favorite though. She's observant, sharp, and internally sarcastic. 'How to describe it? Two years ago, she had felt the cold, distant aura of a nobleman... Now, there was something more—a chill that seeped into her bones.' She's narrating her own life with this detached clarity that's both impressive and heartbreaking. And when she thinks about Xiao Mo's smile—'icy clarity of first snow'—that's not just description, that's her voice coloring the narration. Even the minor characters have distinct voices. Jinping hurrying off because she 'must also go to Miss Liu's courtyard'—two sentences and we know she's a gossip with her own agenda. The author never wastes a line of dialogue.
