Let me just say—the pacing in these chapters is really well controlled. The author doesn't dump everything at once. It starts with Ye Qinglan remembering her job, then she goes to the cooperative, gets the money, buys supplies, comes home, puts pills in the thermos, waits for everyone to sleep, then systematically empties the house. Each action flows naturally into the next, and the reader gets to watch her execute this plan step by step. There's no rushing. Even the discovery that she's in a novel happens at the END of the section, which is a great structural choice—it recontextualizes everything we just read. The train journey section is where the pacing slows down a bit, but it's not dragging. It's giving us breathing room while introducing new characters and building the world. The detail about the sleeper carriage having hot water service, Ye Qinglan knitting a sweater, the enamel mug—these small moments ground the story in its era. And the warning she gives the other educated youths about rural dangers? That's foreshadowing. The author is setting up future conflicts without making it obvious. I think what works best is that every scene has a purpose—either advancing the plot, developing character, or building the world. Nothing feels filler.
