It's such a small, specific detail that immediately grounds you in this world—you can smell the stir-frying vegetables, the rising dough, the white liquor Yan Yunfei brings. The food descriptions alone could make you hungry: braised pork that's "fat but not greasy, melts in the mouth," braised prawns that are "firm, springy, and fresh," chestnut braised chicken with "glutinous chestnuts and flavorful broth." And the buns—soft and chewy, everyone wants five. But it's the evening scenes that really stick with me. The sunset painting the sky orange-red over the small yard. The kerosene lamp casting warm amber light. The fresh sheets that smell of sunlight and soap. The running water sound being "unusually clear in the quiet night, as if striking the heartstrings."
