There are three objects in this chapter that carry so much weight I can't stop thinking about them. The jade bracelet. When Grandma gives it to Jiang Wan, it's not just a gift—it's a transfer of family authority. In Chinese culture, jade bracelets from elders symbolize protection, blessing, and acceptance into the family line. Gu Shilan telling her to keep it on is him acknowledging that blessing. It's his way of saying 'you belong here' without having to say it outright. The cakes from the South City shop. Gu Shilan goes out of his way—his company isn't even on the route—to buy from a place where Jiang Wan used to work part-time and survived on unsold cakes because her stepmother made her skip breakfast. He remembers. He knows her history. The 'Lying Flat Duck' cake is almost comically perfect symbolism—a little white duck just... existing peacefully. That's what he wants for her. And the household register (hukou). In Chinese culture, this document controls everything—marriage, employment, housing. Gu Shilan saying he's come to pick it up to get married is him taking control of her future from the family that tried to sell it. It's the ultimate act of claiming her autonomy. The Jiang family wanted to transactionalize her life; he's reasserting that her life is hers to give away—and she's giving it to him.
