The dialogue in this passage is absolutely filthy in the best way. Not that kind of filthy—though honestly, with the Love Gu situation, maybe a little of that too—but filthy as in perfectly crafted, sharp, and distinctive. Lian Qiao's voice is immediate and recognizable. Her frustration comes through in these clipped, direct exchanges: "Hold on, I know you have a lot of misunderstandings, but you heard it yourself—it really wasn't me." She doesn't waste words. When she's angry she says it. When she's scheming she says it. When she's done with someone's nonsense she says that too. Her dialogue has this no-nonsense rhythm that makes every line feel earned. Lu Wujiu is the perfect counterpoint. His lines are shorter, calmer, almost deceptively simple. "Because I switched the Gu." Three words that completely derail the entire scene. "Just deceiving her, otherwise how could you have gotten away so quickly?" He explains his reasoning like he's stating a mathematical fact. His dialogue never raises in volume but it always lands with maximum impact. Taotie's voice is genuinely hilarious. The contrast between being an ancient ferocious beast and speaking in a child's voice while making faces at Lian Qiao is comedy gold. "You came so fast! I didn't even have time to play!" This thing has the emotional maturity of an actual eight-year-old and the author commits fully to it. Xie Mingran's dialogue shift from panicked denial to fearful sincerity to broken confession is textbook character work. He goes from "Of course I recognize you, you're Junior Sister" to covering his face and slumping to the ground when cornered. His voice is weak, manipulative, and ultimately tragic—all in the span of a few paragraphs. The narrative voice itself is worth praising too. It moves between close third-person perspective on Lian Qiao with this wry, observant quality that lets us into her thoughts without slowing down the action. Lines like "What a slick move!" and "Lian Qiao inwardly rolled her eyes" give the narration personality without breaking immersion.
Okay so let me just say this: Lin Defei is the most terrifying character I've encountered in a while and I need to talk about it. On the surface, he's the nice uncle. The kind one. He even puts pickled vegetables in Lin Qiao'er's bowl and tells her to eat more. But then you hear what happens later that night—this man is literally discussing selling her to human traffickers for a hundred yuan. A hundred yuan! For a human being. The author does something really clever here. Lin Defei's description when he's smiling is almost too perfect: "a broad face and large ears, his smile gentle and amiable." It's the kind of face you'd trust immediately. And that's exactly why it's so chilling when we find out his true nature. The contrast between his public persona and private cruelty is devastating. And then there's Lin Xiuyu—just casually demanding that her floral dress be washed separately while Lin Qiao'er starves. The casualness of it! She doesn't even look up from her bowl. It's not even malicious, it's just... entitlement so deep she doesn't even register Lin Qiao'er as a person. What really got me though is Lin Qiao'er's reaction. She doesn't confront them. She doesn't cry out. She just... absorbs it all and plans her escape. That's not weakness, that's survival instinct kicking into overdrive. The moment she overhears her uncle and aunt discussing her sale and then has to pretend she's just a sleepy girl when he finds her—that scene gave me actual chills. She's playing a dangerous game and she knows it.
