having a good time reading this book. not too much, the story line is so good, enough to make me excited to read the next chapters..
I have to talk about how good the dialogue is in these chapters because the author really knows how to make characters sound distinct. Lu Xiaoxiao's line "Not bad with your tricks, huh? Li Shengxia, you really surprise me" is perfection. It's passive-aggressive, it's threatening, and it's delivered with zero pretense once the door closes. You can literally hear the venom. And Gu Tingting? "Brother, Li Shengxia hit Xiaoxiao! Xiaoxiao's face is covered in blood. Come quickly!" This girl is such a flagrant manipulator and the dialogue makes it clear. She doesn't even wait to see what happened—she just reports the worst possible version immediately. The author doesn't need to tell us Gu Tingting is the villain; her words do all the work. But the real standout is Sheng Xia's internal monologue mixed with her spoken dialogue. When she apologizes to Lu Xiaoxiao at the restaurant, it's awkward and genuine—"I'm sorry! I'm not very good with words." That sounds like a real person who's trying to de-escalate. Then later in the car, she's so desperate to prove she's not jealous that she blurts out the worst possible thing. The contrast between her calculated politeness and her panicked honesty is incredible character work. The gossiping secretaries outside Gu Cheng'an's office also deserve mention. Their dialogue is quick, dismissive, and tells us everything we need to know about how the outside world views Sheng Xia. It's efficient world-building through dialogue.
