The pacing in this section is absolutely ruthless and I mean that as the highest compliment. We go from Xue Mingfei casually browsing fabrics with her mother, to Xue Wanyi waking up gasping from nightmares, to a full-on attempted murder — all within four chapters. And the transitions are seamless. Chapter 4 starts with 'Luring the Kill' and the title says it all. The author doesn't waste a single word building tension — we're thrown straight into the confrontation. Concubine Qiu's dialogue is immediate and vicious: 'I should have strangled you the moment you were born.' No preamble, no slow burn. Just raw hostility. And then Xue Wanyi's response? Calm. Measured. 'The identity of a lowly wretch suits you.' One line and the power dynamic has completely shifted. The structure of the choking scene is particularly well-crafted. It escalates in real time: Xue Wanyi whispers her provocation → Concubine Qiu attacks → Zhenzhu escapes to get help → the matron tries to stop her → Xue Wanyi lies on the ground smiling even as she's dying → Xue Chong bursts in. Each beat follows the last without a single moment of breathing room. And then, just when you think it can't get more intense, Xue Wanyi starts talking mid-choking: 'You... are not my... birth mother.' The author lets her barely form the words before the rescue happens. That's not just good pacing — that's surgical. The aftermath also moves quickly. Ten lashes instead of thirty, Feicui reporting her findings, and then the chapter ends with Xue Wanyi looking out the window at birds flying freely. 'During those years when...' and it cuts off. That cliffhanger is brutal. I need to know what she was about to say.

The story is really good! The writer seemed to be learning how to tell the story from two perspectives. At first the author rewrote whole scenes but listened to readers and adapted it a little better. Still some time jump with perspective changes. Zelena has so many powers it seems a lil contrived.
I waited so long to read the last book of the series and I didn't like it as much as the others. the whole love triangle/threesome trio is just weird and dragging. I spent most of the time scrolling through the pages to find out how the family and public react to Mike coming out.
