This book was well written. It has an exciting story and well-built characters. I can’t find book 1 of this series, but this book gave enough background info that it worked as the first read in the series.

I have to talk about Lu Changzheng's voice because it is absolutely delightful. The man speaks like a military manual had a baby with a romance novel, and I am here for it. 'I don't regret not going on blind dates before. Maybe it was fate all along, waiting for the chance to let me build a family with Comrade Ji.' Bro. You just met her. You walked for, what, fifteen minutes? But the delivery—deadpan, sincere, absolutely no irony—is what makes it work. He's not being smooth. He's being Lu Changzheng, and that's why it's charming. The author clearly designed his dialogue to sound almost awkward, and that awkwardness is his love language. Then there's the internal monologue where he's seriously considering going to the military hospital because 'something is definitely wrong with his heart.' The narrative voice here is fantastic—it's third-person limited, hovering close to Lu Changzheng's perspective, and it captures his confusion about his own emotions perfectly. He's a man who understands missions and drills and discipline, and suddenly his body is doing things he can't explain. The line 'Something is wrong with his head too' had me laughing out loud. Division Commander Zhou's voice is equally distinct. Where Lu Changzheng is clipped and formal, Zhou is exasperated and warm. 'Little Lu... are you absolutely sure Miss Ji really agreed to marry you? You didn't force her, did you?' The shift from 'Reporting to the Division Commander, there is no mistake' to Zhou's horrified realization that his subordinate has gone soft is comedy gold. Chen Xi's dialogue is the most natural and lively of all the characters. Her reactions are immediate and unfiltered: 'Wait, are you sure the officer you went on the blind date with was named Lu Changzheng?' with 'three enormous exclamation marks' above her head. And her threat to punch him 'until even his own parents couldn't recognize him' is the kind of friend dialogue that feels genuinely written from life, not from a romance template. The narrative prose itself has a light, almost cinematic quality. Descriptions like 'His wheat colored face, usually cold, stern, and restrained, shifted from tightly pursed lips to an expression filled with confidence' paint vivid pictures without overwriting. The author knows when to show and when to let dialogue carry the weight.

"It's fine. Characters may lack depth, but that's typical. At least it doesn't rely on excessive slapstick, which seems to plague many other stories. The title can be a bit misleading though. The protagonist possesses Bleach-like powers, but the foes he encounters are far from pushovers."
