I can imagine a wife watching her husband with such high status suffering and in confusion. Things are really not good for Luke. I pity him, eating from office cafeteria. No,this is bad.
Fabulous wrap up to the six pack series. Have to say this is my favourite! Characters are complicated and layered and the plot has many twists to keep you wanting more.
Okay, let me just say this: Mu Hanhe is NOT a country farmer. I mean, come on. The scene where those ruffians surround the tofu vendor—ten breaths, three punches, two kicks, everyone on the ground. This is not someone who grew up hoeing fields. This is someone who has fought on actual battlefields. And Xiao Guiwan notices it immediately. She squeezes his arm and feels stone-hard muscle beneath that coarse fabric. The way she says it is so casual, so natural, like commenting on the weather: With strength like yours, it is a waste to spend your life farming. And his response? I am a countryman. Countrymen are strong. That line hit me like a brick. He is lying through his teeth and she knows it, but she does not push. She just hums tuneless melodies on the donkey cart and wraps her arms around his waist from behind. The unspoken tension between them—the mutual recognition that neither is who they appear to be—is absolutely delicious. Then there is the bedroom scene. She dries his hair, teases him about having a bad temper, asks if she can bully him without getting hit. And when she kisses the top of his head? His shoulders stiffen. He is a man who has clearly never been treated with this kind of gentle affection. And the way he returns the favor, clumsily but patiently drying her hair, then pinning her gently beneath him—that is not the behavior of a rough countryman. That is the behavior of someone who has restraint, control, and genuine tenderness buried deep. Meanwhile, Xiao Shuwan is being dressed in a two-thousand-tael crimson wedding gown embroidered with gold thread phoenixes, and she is thinking about how she will walk the same path Xiao Guiwan took in her previous life—but better. She wants to be Empress. She wants to destroy her sister by proxy. The parallel between the two women is razor-sharp: one married to a pretending soldier in a mud-brick house, the other marrying into a fallen prince who cannot even afford an eight-bearer sedan. Both are playing roles. Both are calculating. The relationship dynamics here are layered beyond belief.
