I wasn't ready for how much Mother Gu's scene affected me. Here's this woman, forty-six but looking old, gray hair on both sides, rubbing her hands nervously because her daughter-in-law just handed her ten yuan and asked her to cook. "You're back. Have you eaten?" The simplest question in the world, delivered with such genuine worry and confusion. And then Lu Zhenzhen, who spent three years being treated like garbage in this house, responds with kindness instead of the rage the original host would've unleashed. The emotional pivot is so subtle but so devastating. Mother Gu has been watching her son's marriage fail from the outside, helpless, unable to intervene because "your daughter-in-law isn't as bad as you think" isn't something you can just say to hostile in-laws. She's trapped between her daughter's scheming and her son's absence and this daughter-in-law she's never been able to reach. And then Lu Zhenzhen walks in with money and asks for food, and for the first time maybe, Mother Gu gets to be a mother instead of a bystander. I also need to mention the Gu Xiaofang dynamic—her innocent-seeming dialogue masking pure calculation, wanting to "coax some money out of" her aunt. The emotional landscape here is layered with people performing kindness while hiding their true intentions, which makes the rare genuine moments hit so much harder. Mother Gu's worry, her "deeply lined face filled with worry"—that's the real thing, and it aches.
