Que Wanshu is a speech therapist who returned to her hometown city of Zicheng after years of living in Yi'an. Her life was upended in her youth when her wealthy family went bankrupt and her father was imprisoned. She had been engaged to Wei Xun, the heir to a powerful conglomerate, but ended the relationship via text message to avoid becoming a burden while caring for her ailing mother. Now working at Yun'an Hospital, she attempts to maintain a quiet professional life, unaware that her past is about to collide with her present.
The story begins with a department dinner where Que Wanshu unexpectedly encounters Huo Haicheng, an old friend who drags her into a private party hosted by Wei Xun. The reunion is hostile; Wei Xun, still harboring resentment over the breakup, forces Que Wanshu to perform for his guests. She humiliates herself by singing a children's song, an act that draws mockery from the crowd. Zhao Xuanyi, a former classmate, intervenes and rescues Que Wanshu from the situation. Meanwhile, Wei Xun’s behavior at the party sparks rumors in their social circle, and he later uses his family’s influence to punish those who mocked Que Wanshu, revealing a complex mix of possessiveness and lingering attachment.
A significant turning point occurs when Que Wanshu is assigned to treat Wei Qian, a five-year-old boy with congenital hearing loss who is Wei Xun’s nephew. Wei Xun arrives for the session, acting as the guardian in place of the child’s parents. The therapy sessions become a battleground for their unresolved history.
