Tang Nai, a sentient piece of milk candy, gains consciousness and enters a post-apocalyptic world governed by a system tasked with guiding her. Her mission is to embody Meng Siyao, the female supporting character in the novel "Step Aside, Zombie, Let Me Handle This." In the original story, Meng Siyao is Jin Xiao’s ex-girlfriend who dumped him due to his family’s decline. She reappears during the zombie apocalypse, using a debt of gratitude from her father to join Jin Xiao’s squad, where she acts as a high-maintenance deadweight until her eventual death. Tang Nai’s goal is to deepen this persona to complete her tasks and ultimately become human.
Jin Xiao leads a squad of supernatural ability users who have defected from their base. He is accompanied by Hong Zhengyuan, a fire-wielder with a volatile temper, and Chi Jing, a sniper with wood-based powers. The group is traveling to an official base in the north, carrying three ordinary survivors, including the female protagonist, Gu Qing. Tang Nai awakens in their vehicle, unconscious, after Jin Xiao saved her from zombies. Hong Zhengyuan is furious, arguing that her presence endangers the team, while Jin Xiao remains stoic, bound by his promise to her father. Tang Nai emits a sweet, syrup-like fragrance that confuses and unsettles the squad, who mistake it for perfume but find it strangely intoxicating.
Upon reaching an abandoned town for rest, Tang Nai begins her performance. She throws away her ration of compressed biscuits, a key plot point intended to highlight her wastefulness and contrast with Gu Qing’s generosity. However, Tang Nai’s natural delicacy causes her to burn her tongue on hot water, leading to an intimate moment where Jin Xiao inspects her injury. Her vulnerability disrupts the expected hostility, causing confusion among the squad members. Later, when tasked with demanding foot-washing water from Hong Zhengyuan, she inadvertently triggers a series of events where he becomes flustered and physically close to her. Gu Qing intervenes, drying Tang Nai’s feet with Hong Zhengyuan’s shirt, further complicating the dynamics.
The journey continues with rising tension. Hong Zhengyuan, unable to cope with his conflicting emotions, wastes water and isolates himself. Tang Nai, struggling with her fear of zombies after witnessing a collision, attempts to eat again but is stopped by Hong Zhengyuan, who reveals he has not eaten in days. Chi Jing enforces the team’s rules by forcing Tang Nai to finish her food, a moment that blurs the line between punishment and intimacy. The squad’s resentment toward Tang Nai grows, yet her actions consistently evoke unexpected reactions from Jin Xiao and Chi Jing. As they approach the provincial capital, Tang Nai faces new missions that threaten to expose her true nature while pushing the plot toward its original tragic trajectory.
