Gu Linchen, a wealthy corporate president from a modern city, dies in a car accident and awakens in the body of a man with the same name in an alternate historical setting called the Xia Dynasty. The original Gu Linchen was a violent, ill-tempered thug from a poor farming family in Dongling Village. He had married a Ger named Feng Ge'er—a male who can bear children—and had a young son, Xige'er. The original owner abused his husband and child, often beating them, and had a notorious reputation in the village. After a head injury and three-day fever, the original Gu Linchen died, and the corporate president's consciousness took over his body.
Initially disoriented, Gu Linchen learns about his new circumstances through fragmented memories. He discovers that males called Ger have a red mole behind their ears, are smaller and weaker than men, but can carry children. The family is extremely poor, surviving on wild vegetables and meager rations. Gu Linchen resolves to change his situation and support his new family. He finds that he retains a personal storage space from his previous life—a dimension containing fruit trees, a wooden house, antiques, gold bars, ginseng, and spiritual spring water that accelerates healing.
Gu Linchen begins by recovering from his injuries using the spiritual water. He gradually builds trust with Feng Ge'er and Xige'er, who are terrified of him due to years of abuse. He shares food with them, gives Xige'er an egg, and speaks gently, slowly breaking down their fear. When his father returns from work with news that a ginseng Gu Linchen found is worth dozens of taels of silver, the family sees hope for the first time.
Gu Linchen travels to the nearby town of Lin'an with his father, uncles, Feng Ge'er, and Xige'er. He sells the ginseng at Huichuntang pharmacy for two hundred taels of silver. With the money, he buys clothes for his family, food, fabric, and household supplies. He is treated dismissively at one shop but welcomed at another, reinforcing his determination to improve his family's circumstances. At a restaurant called Xiang Ju Lou, he orders a proper meal and demonstrates his cooking skills by preparing a pickled cabbage fish dish that impresses the owner, Qin. Qin offers fifty taels of silver for the recipe, which Gu Linchen accepts.
Returning home with a carriage full of goods, Gu Linchen reveals to his mother that he earned two hundred taels. She faints from shock. He gives her a hundred taels to keep safe and plans to invest the rest in business. That evening, he cooks braised pork and bone soup for the family, a meal far superior to their usual diet. The family eats together warmly for the first time, and Gu Linchen feels a sense of belonging he never had in his previous life.
The following days show Gu Linchen adapting to his new role. He practices martial arts to strengthen his weaker body, shares intimate moments with Feng Ge'er, and bonds with Xige'er. He learns that the child is remarkably capable for his age, helping with chores like starting fires. Gu Linchen kisses Xige'er's cheek, moved by how much the child has had to endure. He continues to explore business opportunities, planning to use his cooking skills and storage space to build wealth for his family. The story establishes Gu Linchen's journey from a violent outcast to a responsible husband and father who is determined to provide a better life for those he now loves.
