Lu Ping'an, a former special operations agent from 2035, dies during a mission and transmigrates into the body of a fifteen-year-old boy with the same name in 1973 rural China. He uses the spirit spring water to heal his weakened body and grows crops rapidly, eventually harvesting corn, beans, and other produce within days.
The core conflict arises from the family's extreme poverty and the pressure to secure employment. His father, Lu Fajia, is offered a temporary factory job by the second uncle, which would require a bribe and take him away from the village for good. Lu Ping'an refuses the factory position for himself, arguing that his frail health makes him unsuitable, and instead encourages his father to take the job to secure a permanent urban residence for the family. This decision shifts the family's trajectory toward urbanization.
With the spirit space providing resources, Lu Ping'an engages in hunting and fishing to supplement the household diet. He sets traps in the back mountains, catching pheasants, rabbits, and mountain rats, and uses the spirit spring to attract fish in the river. He shares these provisions with his grandparents, second uncle, and third uncle, strengthening family bonds and earning the admiration of his siblings. His actions are driven by a desire to repay the love shown to him by his grandparents and to ensure his sisters are not treated as inferior due to their gender.
As the story progresses, Lu Ping'an plans to enter the city with his father. He intends to use the money from his daily sign-ins and the sale of spirit-grown produce to purchase ration coupons and other essential goods. His goal is to establish a stable foundation for his family, leveraging his future knowledge of historical events such as the restoration of the college entrance examination and the upcoming economic reforms.
