A pivotal moment occurs when Su Yue raids a nest of mutated reed chickens. She steals four chicks but is confronted by the mother bird, a large, aggressive creature. Su Yue fights it off using her vines and a makeshift weapon, sustaining a severe shoulder wound. Her healing ability rapidly closes the wound, but she wraps it to hide her power. She discovers a crystal core inside the beast, a valuable energy source unknown to most refugees. She sells the chicken parts, feathers, and claws to Aunt Wang for seven thousand credits, a substantial sum. With this capital, she buys insulation panels, winter clothing, and nutritional supplies for the winter.

Su Yue absorbs the crystal core to upgrade her vine ability to Level Two, increasing her range and toxin potency. She uses her new toxin to silence the chicks, preventing them from making noise that could attract attention or reveal their presence. She builds a coop and begins raising the birds for eggs. Later, she joins Song Zhizhi in the sour jujube forest. They are caught in a catastrophic insect storm caused by mutated caterpillars. Su Yue saves Song Zhizhi from a falling insect and leads her to safety. Recognizing the opportunity, Su Yue decides to return to the forest after the Defense Corps clears the area, planning to scavenge the leftovers.
