In the original story, the woman who shared her name was the male lead's first wife, a devoted supporter who financed his education only to be abandoned when he rose to power and married a noblewoman. The original owner died miserably after being framed for adultery by her own family, who were bribed by the novel's female lead. Upon waking in Qinghe Village, Lin Wan faces an immediate crisis: she is about to turn seventeen, and under kingdom law, she will be forcibly married by the authorities if she remains unmarried. Desiring autonomy and aware that the only available men were widowers or men of poor character, she decides to purchase a husband from a local slave market instead.

At the market, Lin Wan bypasses Zhao Qingyuan, the novel's original male lead, who expects her to choose him. Instead, she points to Gu Zhixing, a handsome but critically ill man lying in a corner, costing only two hundred copper coins. She realizes that while she can manage the symptoms, a complete cure requires rare and expensive herbs. Meanwhile, Lin Sheng expresses a desire to drop out of school to help with household labor, but Lin Wan insists he continue his education, recognizing his talent and the need for him to gain political influence to protect them both in the future. She plans to send him to a county academy once their finances allow, ensuring he can rise high enough that the Lin family will never dare to harass them again. The story concludes with Lin Wan preparing to treat her new husband, having successfully altered her fate and set the stage for a new life in this unfamiliar world.
