Can we talk about how Gu Cheng'an speaks versus how everyone else speaks? The author has given him this razor-sharp, clipped dialogue style that's instantly recognizable.
"Decided to come back, did you?" — that's it. No greeting. No warmth. Just a sneer wrapped in seven words.
"Li Shengxia, have you forgotten you're a married woman?" — the way he weaponizes her own status against her. He's not saying it because he cares about the marriage. He's saying it because her independence irritates him.
And then the masterclass: "Put it wherever you like." Four words after she's just spent hours retrieving his precious orchid, apologizing to Shen Jingze, handing back twenty million. That's not indifference. That's contempt dressed as casualness.
Compare that to Shen Jingze's dialogue — soft, accommodating, almost painfully gentle. "If you're short on money, you don't have to return it right away." He offers her an out. Gu Cheng'an offers her a trap. The contrast is brutal and the author doesn't even need to narrate it.
Sheng Xia's voice is the most interesting one though. She starts each confrontation trying to reason, trying to be reasonable, trying to negotiate. "How about this? You've given me plenty of birthday gifts too." She's bargaining with someone who doesn't play fair. But then she has these moments — "Take back the gifts you gave me, and I'll take back the one I gave you. That way, we'll be even" — and you can hear the desperation underneath the boldness. She's not actually confident. She's just tired of being a doormat.
Her parents' dialogue is also doing great work. Her father's quick denial about the money, the forced smile, the immediate pivot to complaining to "the old master" — it's a portrait of a man who knows he's in the wrong but can't stop himself from taking the advantage. And her mother's line "Our Xia Xia is so beautiful. What's wrong with marrying him?" — that's the voice of someone who still doesn't understand the danger they're in.
The hot pot scene with Su Qiao is a nice breather too. Casual, warm, normal friendship dialogue after all that tension. It reminds us that Sheng Xia has a life outside this marriage, even if she's slowly losing it.
