Initially, Luo Zhiyao is viewed as a troublesome, delicate city girl who throws tantrums and refuses to work. Determined to avoid the miserable fate of the vicious supporting character she recognizes from a novel she read, she immediately changes her behavior. She apologizes to her fellow educated youths, learns farming skills from local villagers, and works diligently in the fields. Her sudden maturity confuses those around her, including Pei Feng, who remains distant and indifferent. Luo Zhiyao resolves to stay far away from the novel’s male and female leads, focusing instead on building a comfortable life for herself using the resources in her space. She begins gathering wild mushrooms and medicinal herbs, which she cultivates in her dimension to generate income and improve her diet.

A significant turning point occurs when Luo Zhiyao travels to the county town to collect a package from her family. There, she encounters He Lingyun, a handsome and capable regimental commander who is also from her home brigade. After a series of interactions, including him helping her transport a heavy package and later rescuing her from a wild boar attack in the mountains, a romantic tension develops between them. The spatial system activates fully upon receiving a jade pendant from her brother, revealing itself as a task-based shop where she can exchange points for goods, skills, and martial arts manuals. He Lingyun, intrigued by her change in demeanor and possessing a hidden medical condition that prevents him from having children, proposes a trial relationship, offering her financial support and emotional commitment.

Luo Zhiyao accepts his proposal cautiously, agreeing to get to know him better before making a final decision. This alliance shifts her social standing in the brigade, drawing both admiration and jealousy from other villagers. While Pei Feng and the original novel’s heroine remain in the background, Luo Zhiyao focuses on integrating into rural life, leveraging her modern knowledge and spatial abilities to secure food, medicine, and future prosperity. She plans to build her own house and eventually engage in business after the political climate shifts in the late 1970s. The story follows her navigation of complex social dynamics, her growing bond with He Lingyun, and her strategic use of the spatial system to overcome the hardships of the era while avoiding the pitfalls of her original narrative role.
