Yun Chaorong, a seasoned transmigrator accustomed to playing villainous roles in tragic novels, accidentally transmigrates into the body of Yun Chaorong, the delicate and tragic female lead of the unfinished novel Love That Topples a Nation. Originally intended to inhabit the wicked Empress Yun Jingshan to push the plot toward its conclusion, she finds herself in the body of the Grand Princess of Da Yu, a woman destined to be bullied, heartbroken, and imprisoned by the male lead, General Xie Nanzhu. Refusing to accept the fate of a delicate flower, she resolves to live boldly and unapologetically, discarding her obsessive love for Xie Nanzhu and deciding to pursue her own desires.
The story begins with Da Yu in a precarious war against the Northern Qiang. The original host had volunteered for a political marriage alliance to save the captured Xie Nanzhu, a act of self-sacrifice that led to her suffering and death in the original plot. Upon waking, Yun Chaorong immediately reverses this decision, refusing to go to the Northern Qiang. She confronts and punishes Lian'er, a palace maid planted by Xie Nanzhu to spy on her, demonstrating her new assertive nature. She then approaches her father, Emperor Yun Ji, a benevolent but politically naive ruler. Using the guise of a dream visit from her deceased mother, she predicts that the Northern Qiang will halt their advance at Binshui City due to internal turmoil and offers strategic advice to bolster the war effort. Her intervention successfully persuades the Emperor to allow her elder brother, Prince Rui Yun Canglan, to lead troops to the front lines, aiming to prevent the military failures that led to his death in the original story.
A significant turning point occurs when Yun Chaorong encounters Su Jingyuan, the sickly second young master of the Duke of Yu's residence, during a carriage accident. Struck by his ethereal beauty, she takes him to Prince Rui's residence for medical care, marking the beginning of her interest in him. This encounter diverges sharply from the original plot, where Su Jingyuan played only a minor, cynical role. Meanwhile, Yun Chaorong confronts Imperial Consort Li, who had manipulated the original host and stolen her belongings. Yun Chaorong publicly reclaims her property and forces the consort to organize a Lotus Viewing Banquet, using political maneuvering to weaken her rival's influence while gaining prestige for herself.
As Yun Canglan departs for the battlefield, Yun Chaorong remains in the capital, navigating court politics and managing military provisions. She reconnects with the Shen twins, Shen Yazhi and Shen Qingzhi, childhood companions who were previously alienated by the original host's foolishness. Yun Chaorong repairs these relationships, securing allies for her new path. The narrative highlights the contrast between her current proactive stance and the passive suffering of the original protagonist. While Xie Nanzhu remains a captive in the Northern Qiang camp, plotting his escape and unaware that his political marriage has been averted, Yun Chaorong establishes her own agency.
