Ruan Xingmian, a twenty-eight-year-old successful self-media entrepreneur, dies from exhaustion after binge-reading a poorly written romance novel and transmigrates into the body of a fictional character with the same name. The original host was a rebellious, love-crazed villainess supporting female character who shared her face with her well-behaved cousin, Ruan Xingyue, the novel's female lead. Upon waking in a hotel room, Ruan Xingmian finds herself on top of Gu Xing, the story's tragic second male lead, who has been drugged by the original host as part of a scheme to steal his research achievements for the male lead, Lu Tian. Although the original plot intended for the host to sleep with Lu Tian while framing Gu Xing, Ruan Xingmian fights the drug's effects and attempts to flee. However, Gu Xing, losing control, prevents her escape, and they spend a passionate night together. Ruan Xingmian flees the next morning, determined to avoid the original storyline which ends with Gu Xing's mental breakdown and suicide after being deceived by the villainess.
A month and a half later, Ruan Xingmian discovers she is pregnant. Realizing she cannot return to her previous life, she decides to keep the child and start over. She works part-time jobs to save money and plans to rebuild her self-media career. Her primary goal is to find Gu Xing and inform him of the pregnancy. She locates him at a top-tier university where he is a brilliant graduate student in Artificial Intelligence. When she confronts him, Gu Xing is initially hostile and fearful, believing she is playing another one of her schemes. However, upon seeing the pregnancy test, his demeanor shifts. He calculates the cost of an abortion and postpartum care, offering her all his savings, showing his sincere and responsible nature despite his poverty. Ruan Xingmian refuses the abortion and asks him to raise the child with her. Gu Xing, moved by her change in attitude, agrees. He publicly declares her as his girlfriend in front of a rival, Ji Ling, who is also pursuing him, thereby establishing their relationship.
As they navigate their new dynamic, Ruan Xingmian moves into a small, dilapidated apartment near the university to film renovation videos for her self-media account, using their relationship as a topic to attract followers. Gu Xing supports her ambitions, bringing her food and helping with chores, though he remains reserved. Their relationship deepens through small gestures, such as holding hands and sharing meals. Meanwhile, Lu Tian, the male lead, continues to manipulate events from the shadows, attempting to separate Gu Xing and Ruan Xingmian by leaking information about their relationship to Gu Xing's peers and professors. Despite the external pressures and the looming threat of the original plot's tragedy, Ruan Xingmian remains focused on building a stable life for herself and her child, determined to change Gu Xing's fate and protect him from the cruelty that awaited him in the novel.
