Yang Tiehua, a woman who died of terminal cancer at age forty-six after spending her life loving a married man named Fu Ziheng, wakes up in 1986. She has transmigrated into the body of Fu Ziheng’s young, abusive wife, who shares her name. In her previous life, she had been an orphan saved by Fu Ziheng, eventually becoming his live-in helper and dying while shielding him from an assassin. Now reborn as the wife he fears, she is determined to make amends for the original owner’s cruelty. The original Yang Tiehua was a tyrant who forced Fu Ziheng into unwanted marital duties, beat him, neglected his severe leg injury, and planned to sell his mother to a dangerous widower named Old Shen to pay off a debt to a local thug, Li Daniu. Upon waking, Yang Tiehua is horrified by her reflection and the immediate threat of violence from Fu Ziheng, who believes she is about to assault him. She breaks down in tears, realizing she has been given a second chance to protect the man she always loved.
Yang Tiehua immediately changes her behavior, slapping herself to break the original owner’s delusions and tenderly caring for Fu Ziheng’s injured leg. She discovers the extent of the original owner’s abuse through the fearful words of Fu Ziheng’s children, Niannian and An’an, who are malnourished and abused. Yang Tiehua’s own family, led by her doting father Yang Jiujin and brother Yang Tiechui, arrives with money and pork, revealing they are incredibly wealthy and devoted to her, despite her selfishness. Yang Tiehua is moved by their unconditional love and vows to change. She uses her knowledge of the future to intervene when Old Shen arrives to forcibly take Mother Fu as a bride. She threatens Old Shen with a cleaver, retrieves the 800 yuan bride price from Li Daniu by physically intimidating him, and returns the money, preventing the sale of her mother-in-law.
When Old Shen attempts to kidnap Yang Tiehua in revenge, her father and brother arrive with a tractor full of workers, overwhelming the villagers. During the confrontation, Yang Tiehua fakes a miscarriage to incite public outrage and bring the police. The scheme succeeds; Old Shen is arrested and faces execution, and the sugar factory, which was struggling, uses the incident to cut ties with Shenjia Village. Fu Ziheng’s leg is treated at a hospital in the provincial capital, Yangcheng. Yang Tiehua learns from her father that Fu Ziheng is supposedly infertile, a claim she knows is false based on her memories of his twins in her past life. Misunderstanding her earlier joke about selling his kidney, Fu Ziheng believes she only pretends to be kind to exploit him, deepening his despair.
In Yangcheng, Yang Tiehua identifies a business opportunity in a failing wonton shop across from a rude competitor. She proposes an investment deal to the owner, Liu Qing, offering capital and recipes for a thirty percent profit share. She plans to introduce steamed dumplings and soup, items that would later become a national phenomenon. Meanwhile, at the hospital, Yang Tiehua witnesses a medical dispute involving a doctor named Zheng Chao, who is being framed for a kidney trafficking scandal. Remembering Zheng Chao’s future heroism and tragic suicide, she intervenes publicly, exposing the logical flaws in the accusation and protecting the doctor from the mob. This act demonstrates her growing influence and moral compass, as she navigates the complexities of 1980s China while trying to repair her relationship with Fu Ziheng and build a better future for both families.
The story follows Yang Tiehua as she balances her new role as a supportive wife with her ambition to use her foreknowledge to succeed in the emerging market economy. She sells her grandfather’s bracelet to fund her business ventures, unaware that Fu Ziheng interprets her actions as premeditated exploitation. Despite his mistrust, she continues to care for his family, treating Mother Fu with respect and providing for the children. Her actions begin to soften the household’s attitude toward her, though Fu Ziheng remains guarded. The narrative highlights her efforts to correct past wrongs, protect those she cares about from future tragedies, and establish herself as a formidable businesswoman while navigating the treacherous social dynamics of her new life.
