Jiang Wanning, a modern woman with no patience for melodramatic romance novels, finds herself transmigrated into the body of the novel's ultimate villainess: the abusive, foolish mother of the male lead, Shen Yutang. Upon waking to the sound of her son slapping his pregnant wife, Murong Qing, Jiang Wanning realizes she has entered a tragic story where she is destined to torment the female lead and eventually be divorced by her husband, the Marquis of Pingyang, Shen Yan. When Doctor Zhang inadvertently reveals that Murong Qing was pregnant the previous month, Shen Yutang flies into a rage and attempts to choke his wife. Jiang Wanning physically restrains him, slaps him, and forces him to kneel, breaking his blind devotion to Yan'er. As the story progresses, Murong Qing begins to awaken from her subservience.
