Song Yunqiao transmigrates into a novel set during the Chinese educated youth movement, inhabiting the body of a minor female character destined for an early, tragic death. Rather than the glamorous life she anticipated, she finds herself on a tractor bound for Huohe Village, a rural destination shared with the novel’s protagonists, An Yanyan and Gu Guanghua, as well as the antagonistic Ma Xiaoping. Ma Xiaoping, whose family is poor, had previously manipulated the original Song Yunqiao into accompanying her to the countryside, relying on the wealthy girl’s resources. Upon arrival, Song Yunqiao quickly assesses her surroundings and discovers she possesses a spiritual spring ability that allows her to generate water with restorative properties, a crucial asset for survival in this harsh environment.
The new arrivals are assigned to live in a modest dormitory shared with other educated youths. Song Yunqiao immediately distances herself from Ma Xiaoping, refusing to be exploited for food or money. When Ma Xiaoping attempts to guilt Song Yunqiao into sharing supplies after a grueling day of field work, Song Yunqiao firmly rejects her, ending their friendship. This shift confuses Ma Xiaoping, who is accustomed to her former friend’s compliance, and creates tension within the group. Meanwhile, Song Yunqiao observes the dynamics between the novel’s leads, noting Jiang Xueming’s obsessive devotion to An Yanyan and the growing interest of Gu Guanghua in the heroine. She resolves to avoid entanglement with the main plot, focusing instead on enduring the physical labor and maintaining her health through the benefits of her spiritual water.
A significant turning point occurs when Song Yunqiao is attacked by Li Gouzi, a local troublemaker, while walking alone in the village. Jiang Jiyuan, the eldest son of a local farming family and a supporting character in the novel known for his tragic fate, intervenes and saves her. Jiang Jiyuan is stoic and reserved, but the incident sparks an unspoken connection between him and Song Yunqiao. He begins to assist her with her farm work, and she, aware of his future imprisonment and death linked to the protagonists, seeks to alter his destiny. Their relationship develops quietly, marked by mutual respect and subtle care, contrasting with the dramatic and often toxic interactions surrounding An Yanyan.
Conflict escalates when An Yanyan falsely accuses Song Yunqiao of spreading rumors about a marriage proposal made by Wu Hongliang, the son of the production team leader. The accusation leads to a public confrontation and a physical fight between Jiang Xueming and Wu Hongliang. Song Yunqiao defends herself sharply, exposing An Yanyan’s lack of evidence and earning the support of the local villagers who resent the city girls’ arrogance. Following this, Ma Xiaoping’s jealousy intensifies. During a laundry session at the river, Ma Xiaoping deliberately causes both her and Song Yunqiao to fall into the water, attempting to drown Song Yunqiao to steal her family’s supplies. Jiang Jiyuan rescues Song Yunqiao, performing mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, while Gu Guanghua saves Ma Xiaoping. The village rumors suggest a romantic link between Song Yunqiao and Jiang Jiyuan, which Jiang Jiyuan accepts by declaring his intention to marry her, signaling a decisive shift in his fate and his commitment to protecting Song Yunqiao.
