Su Baiyue finds herself transmigrated into the body of Liu Ling, also known as Mistress Lingyun, a character from a novel titled Dominance. In the original story, Liu Ling serves as the male lead’s unattainable first love, a pure and cold beauty who systematically humiliates the protagonist, Lu Gan, to drive him toward greatness. Lu Gan, born into poverty, rises from a lowly stable boy to become a feared warlord and eventually the emperor who reunifies the fractured lands. Su Baiyue’s task is to fulfill Liu Ling’s role without deviating from the plot, despite her internal revulsion toward the character’s cruel behavior and her own physical discomfort due to Liu Ling’s frail, sickly constitution.
The story begins with Liu Ling’s arrival in the Imperial City to greet her brother, General Liu Chen, who has returned victorious from the frontier. Upon exiting her carriage, Su Baiyue encounters Lu Gan, a ragged teenage boy collapsed at her feet. True to the narrative, she discards her luxurious cloak over him to avoid touching the filth, then steps carefully over his body to maintain her pristine image. Later, at a racetrack gathering attended by the Crown Prince and other nobles, Su Baiyue is forced to participate in a scene where she whips Lu Gan three times. The first two lashes are administered while he kneels, and the third is delivered after she accidentally falls from her horse and he catches her. Although Su Baiyue attempts to minimize the physical harm, her actions still wound him emotionally, reinforcing his obsession with her.
As the plot progresses, Su Baiyue discovers that Lu Gan has been secretly leaving pastries in her private garden, which she eagerly consumes to stave off hunger. When Mistress Yang Shi, a rival noblewoman, attempts to claim Lu Gan as a male pet, Su Baiyue intervenes to protect him, declaring him her possession. She forces him to lick her finger in front of the crowd to assert dominance, a act that further entangles Lu Gan’s devotion to her. Despite her efforts to keep him distant, Lu Gan becomes her personal attendant, and Su Baiyue publicly declares him her dog to prevent others from touching him. This arrangement continues until her engagement to the Crown Prince is finalized, a necessary step in the original storyline.
A critical turning point occurs during a retreat to a royal temple, where assassins sent by Mistress Yang Shi attack the procession. Lu Gan rescues Su Baiyue, carrying her into a cave to hide from their pursuers. Trapped together in the dark, Lu Gan confesses his desire to marry her, and Su Baiyue, needing to stabilize the situation, falsely promises to grant his wish if he brings her back safely. However, upon their return, Su Baiyue’s mother, the Princess of Weinan, discovers the promise and conspires with a servant to have Lu Gan beaten and left for dead in the mountains. Su Baiyue overhears this plot but remains passive, adhering to the script.
Lu Gan survives due to the intervention of Wei Sa, a young nobleman who values loyalty. Rescued but broken, Lu Gan witnesses Su Baiyue publicly denouncing him in a bookstore, claiming she never cared for him and that burying him was a mercy. This final betrayal shatters his hope, yet it also ignites his determination to rise above his station. Su Baiyue believes the plot is now on track, expecting Lu Gan to leave and begin his journey to power. However, the story diverges when political turmoil ensues: Liu Chen is captured by enemies, and the Crown Prince’s engagement to Su Baiyue is canceled in favor of marrying Mistress Yang Shi. Lu Gan, now allied with Wei Sa, sends Su Baiyue a marriage proposal and demands her signature in exchange for rescuing her brother. The narrative concludes with Su Baiyue facing an unexpected crisis, as Lu Gan refuses to let her go, forcing her to confront a future that deviates significantly from the original novel’s ending.
