Transmigrated as a Widow, Fighting to Survive a Harsh Famine

Xia Wanyue is a retired special operations agent who lives a secluded life in a countryside villa, having accumulated substantial wealth and supplies during her years of service. While reading a novel titled "Picking Up a Man to Get Through Life," she becomes enraged by the weak and passive behavior of a side character who shares her name. In a fit of frustration, she tosses her phone aside and falls asleep on her rooftop terrace. A meteor strikes her home, killing her and transporting her consciousness into the body of Yue Niang, the same-named cannon-fodder character in the novel. Yue Niang is a heavily pregnant widow in the Dai Kingdom who has just given birth to a son after her husband, Li Ke, was killed by a black bear while hunting for food to nourish her. The original Yue Niang died from shock and exhaustion immediately after delivery, leaving behind three young children: Li Ning, Li San-Ya, and the newborn.

Xia Wanyue wakes up in a dilapidated thatched hut within the Li family compound, immediately discovering that she possesses a spatial dimension containing her entire villa, basement supplies, and livestock. However, the space is currently sealed by fog, limiting her ability to retrieve items freely. She learns that the Li family is a large, dysfunctional extended household controlled by the miserly and cruel Old Madam Wang. The family is suffering through a severe drought, and resources are scarce. Old Madam Wang and her favored youngest son’s family systematically starve and abuse Yue Niang and her children, blaming them for the death of the second son, Li Ke. Despite the physical weakness of her new body, Xia Wanyue retains her combat skills and lethal efficiency.

The central conflict escalates when Old Madam Wang accuses Xia Wanyue of stealing grain after she prepares a meal for her own children. The matriarch incites a mob, including Xia Wanyue’s elder brother-in-law Li Shi and youngest brother-in-law Li Xin, to beat her to death. Xia Wanyue fights back with brutal precision, using an iron rod to incapacitate multiple attackers, including breaking Li Shi’s arm and injuring Li Xin’s leg. Her display of violence shocks the onlookers and the village head, who arrives to mediate. Xia Wanyue manipulates the situation by feigning victimhood, presenting herself as a desperate mother trying to protect her children from starvation and abuse.

Under pressure from the village head and the community’s sympathy, Old Man Li is forced to agree to a separation. Xia Wanyue demands a mutual divorce rather than a repudiation, ensuring her reputation remains intact for her children’s sake. She secures the right to take all three children with her. The village head’s wife and Aunt Zhang provide her with a rundown thatched hut at the edge of the village, which they help repair. Now living independently but with no money and limited access to her spatial supplies, Xia Wanyue must navigate the impending famine. She ventures into the mountains to hunt and gather medicinal herbs like ginseng to generate income and sustain her family, while also encountering a wounded man in luxurious clothing who has been shot with an arrow, hinting at larger political intrigues awaiting her in this new world.
