Jiang Qingli, a thirty-three-year-old medical school intern from the twenty-first century, transmigrates into the body of a woman who shares her name. The original Jiang Qingli was a capitalist heiress in 1976 China who despised her arranged marriage to Shen Li, a poor soldier, and died by suicide only three months after the wedding. Upon regaining consciousness, Jiang Qingli finds herself in a modest rural home with her loving but worried parents, Wang Qiuyue and Jiang Changjiang. They are preparing to divorce her from Shen Li to protect her from the hardships of the Shen household. However, Jiang Qingli recognizes that Shen Li, despite his current low status as an assistant officer in a livestock farm, will eventually become a powerful military figure. Understanding the political dangers facing her new family as capitalists, she decides to remain married and return to the Shen family compound to secure her survival.

Upon arriving at the military compound, Jiang Qingli faces immediate hostility from her neighbors, who view her as a lazy, gluttonous, and abusive woman. The original owner had stolen food, forced the nine-year-old Shen Xiaohua to cook and clean, and generally caused chaos. Jiang Qingli finds the living quarters in a state of filth and begins a rigorous cleaning routine to reverse the community's perception of her. Her efforts are interrupted when Shen Xiaohua returns home with a severely injured leg after falling into a ditch on her long walk back from cooking duties. The compound residents gather, assuming Jiang Qingli has neglected the girl or caused the accident, and refuse to help due to fears of medical costs and past grievances.

Jiang Qingli takes charge of the situation, demonstrating her medical knowledge by cleaning, stitching, and splinting the girl's wound. Her competent and gentle handling of the injury shocks the neighbors, who are unaccustomed to seeing her act with care. She comforts the terrified Shen Xiaohua, who expects punishment, and instead offers her kindness and food. The next morning, Jiang Qingli attempts to cook for the first time, creating corn pancakes that delight the young girl. When neighbors visit to check on Xiaohua, they are surprised to find the room clean and the girl well-fed, leading to a gradual shift in public opinion, though skepticism remains high.

Seeking a way to earn money and improve her standing, Jiang Qingli visits a local tofu shop run by Wang Dagou. She discovers that his batch of tofu has spoiled due to the heat, threatening his contract with the supply and marketing cooperative. Recalling a recipe for Hairy Tofu, a preserved delicacy made from moldy tofu, she proposes transforming the ruined product into a new commodity. Wang Dagou is hesitant but agrees to let her attempt the process. As the cooperative director arrives early for inspection, Jiang Qingli works quickly in the backyard to prepare the fermented tofu, aiming to save Wang Dagou's livelihood and establish a source of income for her own family. The story concludes with the outcome of her culinary experiment pending, as she attempts to turn a disaster into an opportunity in the restrictive economic environment of the era.
