Qiao Yuewei awakens in 1969 Shanghai, inhabiting the body of a cannon-fodder supporting character from a novel she previously read. In the original story, this Qiao Yuewei was framed by her stepmother Hu Xiumei and half-sister He Chuchu for sabotaging He Chuchu’s marriage. Consequently, Qiao Yuewei was tricked into going to the countryside, where she died alone and in misery, while her family fled to Hong Kong with the Qiao family fortune. Upon waking, Qiao Yuewei finds her father, He Runsong, demanding she transfer her coveted job at a food factory to He Chuchu and go to the countryside in her place. Qiao Yuewei refuses, asserting her right to keep both her job and her arranged marriage to Qin Xingye, a military officer.
Qiao Yuewei discovers she has brought her mother’s spatial jade bracelet with her, which contains a fully stocked mall and a farm with spirit spring water. This gives her access to endless supplies and a safe haven. She also learns that He Runsong is secretly planning to flee to Hong Kong with the family’s hidden wealth, leaving her to face the political consequences. Determined to survive and exact revenge, Qiao Yuewei allies with Uncle Ren, her grandfather’s loyal servant, who guards the old Qiao mansion. She retrieves the deed to their home and begins systematically stripping He Runsong’s family of their ill-gotten gains, transferring their hidden cash, gold, and vouchers into her spatial dimension.
When Hu Xiumei attempts to force Qiao Yuewei into marriage with her disfigured nephew, Hu Dashu, to secure a way out of the countryside for her own children, Qiao Yuewei outmaneuvers them. She calls the police, exposing Hu Dashu’s lewd intentions and Hu Xiumei’s interference with a military marriage. Qiao Yuewei presents her official engagement certificate to Qin Xingye, protecting herself under military law. The police arrest Hu Xiumei and Hu Dashu. Meanwhile, Qiao Yuewei registers He Chuchu for the countryside program, sending her to the Eastern Province instead of the original destination, cutting off He Chuchu’s path to the male lead of the novel.
He Runsong discovers his hidden treasures and escape tickets are missing. In a fit of rage, he attempts to strangle Qiao Yuewei at the mansion. Qiao Yuewei screams for help, and passing police officers intervene, arresting He Runsong for attempted murder and hoarding gold. Qiao Yuewei then donates her residence to the Children’s Welfare Institute, leaving He Runsong and his remaining family homeless. She transfers her job to a kind colleague, Sister Sun, and prepares to leave for the Southern Military District to join her fiancé.
During her train journey, Qiao Yuewei encounters two women from the Southern District Performing Arts Troupe, including Fang Yuanyuan, who harbors a secret crush on Qin Xingye. Qiao Yuewei also prevents a human trafficking incident by alerting train staff to a woman drugging a child. Upon arriving in Haicheng, she is met by Qin Xingye, who had come to the station specifically for her, rejecting Fang Yuanyuan’s assumptions. Qiao Yuewei begins her new life as a military dependent, having secured her future and dismantled the family that sought to destroy her.
