Yu Duojiaye is a university student living a quiet, solitary life in a modest home. His routine is disrupted by his neighbor, Kawakami Fujiang, a breathtakingly beautiful girl who possesses supernatural abilities. Fujiang is an immortal entity whose body periodically splits off fragments during her menstrual cycle. These fragments, known as Splintered bodies, manifest as small, fleshy, humanoid creatures that must be incinerated to prevent them from growing into independent, hostile versions of her. Yu Duojiaye serves as the reluctant caretaker of these entities, burning them in a specialized incinerator in his yard. Despite the grotesque nature of her condition, Fujiang maintains a haughty, spoiled, and often violent demeanor toward Yu Duojiaye, who remains largely unfazed by her charm due to a unique immunity developed after a past incident.
The core conflict arises from the dangerous duality of Fujiang’s existence. While she appears as a perfect, popular university student who effortlessly manipulates those around her with her beauty, she is internally a vessel of negative emotions and bloodlust. Her Splintered bodies, particularly a miniature version referred to as Little Tomie, retain her consciousness and memories. Yu Duojiaye is forced to kill these fragments to maintain Fujiang’s stability, a task that weighs heavily on his psyche. The relationship between them is complicated by their shared history; during their junior high years, Yu Duojiaye saved Fujiang from two homeless men who had fallen under her charm and turned on her. He was severely injured in the process, and his act of selfless protection planted a seed of confusion and nascent affection in Fujiang, who had never been saved before.
A significant turning point occurs when Yu Duojiaye discovers a girl named Jiayezi hiding in the rain near his home. Jiayezi is revealed to be a powerful evil spirit, a being of pure malice with abilities far exceeding Fujiang’s. Despite the existential threat she poses, Yu Duojiaye takes her in, driven by a sense of compassion. This decision creates a tense triangular dynamic. Fujiang, aware of Jiayezi’s presence and Yu Duojiaye’s care for her, becomes increasingly jealous and possessive. Meanwhile, Little Tomie, the miniature Splintered body living in Yu Duojiaye’s home, also develops a deep attachment to him, viewing Fujiang as a rival for his affection. The three entities—Fujiang, Little Tomie, and Jiayezi—share a complex web of memories and emotions with Yu Duojiaye, blurring the lines between his relationships with them.
As the story progresses, Yu Duojiaye struggles to balance his duties as a caretaker with his own emotional well-being. He is acutely aware that his immunity to Fujiang’s charm is fading, making his growing feelings for her dangerous. He fears that if he fully succumbs to her allure, he will become like the other men who are driven to kill her, perpetuating the cycle of violence. The narrative explores themes of isolation, the nature of monstrosity, and the possibility of connection between beings who are fundamentally different. Yu Duojiaye’s decision to protect both Fujiang and Jiayezi sets the stage for further conflicts, as the presence of two such powerful entities in his life threatens to unravel the fragile peace he has maintained. The story moves toward a climax where Yu Duojiaye must confront the true nature of his bond with Fujiang and the potential consequences of harboring an evil spirit like Jiayezi under his roof.
