Su Tao, a woman from the modern era, finds herself transported to 1970s China, inhabiting the body of an orphan living with her abusive uncle and aunt in Sujia Village. Her arrival coincides with a catastrophic event: after being drugged by a village thug, she accidentally encounters a man named Lu Chengzhou in a cornfield. The two share a night together, but Su Tao has no memory of his face, only his physical presence. Weeks later, she discovers she is pregnant. In the rigid social climate of the 1970s, an unmarried pregnant woman faces social ruin, potential suicide, or forced marriage to a undesirable bachelor. With her family planning to marry her off to Wang Baoguo, the thug who drugged her, to cover their shame and gain a dowry, Su Tao realizes she must escape.

Desperate and with no money, Su Tao overhears hospital gossip about Lu Chengzhou, a chief engineer at a military research institute who has lost his memory in a car accident. She identifies him as the father and decides to claim him as her partner. She rushes to his ward, dramatically falling into his arms and pretending to be his grieving girlfriend. Lu Chengzhou, confused and amnesiac, is initially cold and suspicious, especially when a jealous nurse accuses Su Tao of being a gold-digger due to her shabby appearance. However, Su Tao’s quick wit and convincing backstory about meeting him during a suicide attempt deflect the accusations. When Lu Chengzhou’s colleague, Wang Jianguo, arrives to verify her story, Su Tao risks everything by detailing their secret romance. To her surprise, Lu Chengzhou chooses to protect her, claiming his memory is returning and confirming their relationship, thereby shielding her from interrogation.

Realizing she cannot stay indefinitely without exposing her lie, Su Tao initially plans to take Lu Chengzhou’s money and flee. She attempts to buy a forged introduction letter from a black market contact but stumbles upon a murder den, barely escaping with her life after killing the old woman who ran it. Terrified and realizing she cannot survive alone in this era, she returns to Lu Chengzhou, deciding to stay by his side until he recovers his memory, hoping he will let her go afterward. She transforms her appearance by buying new clothes and bathing, shedding the image of a peasant girl. Meanwhile, she stages a fake suicide by drowning to erase her identity from her abusive family, leaving a note that leads the Wang family to believe she died of shame. The Wang family then uses her “death” to extort compensation from the hospital, a scheme Su Tao discovers with dark amusement.

As Su Tao and Lu Chengzhou travel together to his military base, their dynamic shifts. Lu Chengzhou, though still guarded, shows unexpected tenderness, sharing his food with her and caring for her when she suffers from motion sickness and pregnancy fatigue. He allows her to rest her head on his shoulder and even massages her feet, actions that betray his growing affection despite his cold exterior. Su Tao, in turn, uses her modern knowledge and charm to navigate the conservative social norms, teasing him and breaking down his emotional barriers. The journey reveals that Lu Chengzhou is not the indifferent man she initially exploited, but a capable, handsome, and secretly caring individual. Their forced proximity begins to blur the lines between her deception and genuine emotion, setting the stage for a complex relationship as Su Tao faces the looming threat of her past catching up and Lu Chengzhou’s memory potentially returning.
