Bai You enters the horror escape game Ember, assigned to the D-difficulty scenario Seventh High School. Upon waking in a classroom, she discovers a chalkboard message reading "Go Die" and receives a beginner gift pack containing a worthless N-grade item, a deck of playing cards. The system grants her the identity of Lin Songyue, a seventeen-year-old senior student who appears to be a victim of severe bullying, evidenced by vulgar graffiti scrawled across her desk. The scenario lacks explicit tasks, suggesting a special role-playing instance where Bai You must navigate social interactions while uncovering the truth behind her new identity.
While exploring the classroom, Bai You encounters Si Yu, a calm and enigmatic boy who unlocks the door and casually reads through Lin Songyue’s notebook, discovering she writes melodramatic romance novels. A pink love letter addressed to Si Yu falls from a textbook, revealing that the real Lin Songyue had confessed her feelings to him just the day before. Si Yu agrees to the relationship despite Bai You’s clumsy attempts to maintain her cover, though he displays a cold, dismissive attitude, calling her "dirty" when she tries to hold his hand. Bai You realizes Si Yu is likely an NPC due to his advanced knowledge of the scenario’s context.
Bai You retreats to the girls' restroom to avoid a group of approaching students, where she encounters Xiaoxue, a novice ghost struggling with her haunting duties. Instead of fleeing, Bai You critiques Xiaoxue’s ineffective scare tactics and physically wipes chalk dust from her face, establishing a mentorship dynamic. Meanwhile, three other players—Zhao Xiangwen, Luo Feipeng, and Xiong Haoyu—discover a female corpse with silver-gray hair lying in a pool of blood outside the teaching building. They deduce the victim is Lin Songyue, who supposedly jumped to her death after being bullied over missing class funds for a New Year’s Eve party.
The three boys enter the classroom and are immediately subjected to a terrifying illusion: the room fills with a rising pool of blood containing severed limbs and staring eyeballs. They are dragged toward the liquid, with Xiong Haoyu jumping from the sixth-floor window to escape the horror. Bai You, watching from a distance, admits to Xiaoxue that she orchestrated the illusion to increase the game’s difficulty after receiving complaints that the dungeon was not scary enough. The illusion breaks, and the boys find themselves unharmed but traumatized, only to discover the corpse they saw earlier has vanished.
Bai You reveals her player status to the group and joins them, though she hides her true identity as Lin Songyue by wearing a metal mask. The team splits up to complete their tasks, with Bai You accompanying Zhao Xiangwen to the faculty office. There, they find Si Yu sitting beside an unconscious Zhao Xiangwen. Si Yu removes Bai You’s mask, criticizing it as ugly, and his eyes momentarily shift to a dark red hue, hinting at a supernatural nature. He warns Bai You that time is running out before leaving them.
When Zhao Xiangwen wakes, he accuses Bai You of being an NPC who deceived the team for information. Bai You logically refutes the claim, pointing out that NPCs do not possess identity cards and that she helped break their illusion. She explains that the "dead" Lin Songyue they saw was likely part of the illusion, as her own body is warm and alive. The narrative ends with Bai You tending to the unconscious Zhao Xiangwen while Si Yu’s cryptic warning lingers, suggesting that the true nature of the scenario and the line between life and death in the game are far more complex than initially perceived.
