Mai Sui, a ruthless warlord from a post-apocalyptic wasteland five thousand years in the future, is transported back to 1976 rural China. She inhabits the body of Mai Sui, an eighteen-year-old woman with an intellectual disability who is known for falling into ditches and being unable to perform basic labor. The original Mai Sui had died shortly after Mai Laosan, the new host's father, and Mai Hongcai, her brother, began neglecting her. Upon arriving in Lianhua Village, Mai Sui quickly assesses her surroundings and realizes she is in a peaceful era where strength is not the primary currency of survival. However, she retains her violent instincts and combat skills from her previous life. Her first challenge is domestic; Mai Laosan and Mai Hongcai are lazy, abusive, and expect her to continue performing all household chores despite her intellectual disability. When Mai Laosan demands she cook and serve him after losing money gambling, Mai Sui physically assaults him and her brother, establishing a new hierarchy in the household where she is the dominant figure.
The village team leader, Mai Xiangdong, who is Mai Laosan's eldest brother, attempts to intervene and force Mai Sui to work in the fields during the busy harvest season. He threatens to deduct their family's work points, which are essential for food rations. Mai Sui initially refuses, preferring to live a quiet life, but her standards for food and comfort clash with the extreme poverty of her new family. She discovers that her family survives by constantly borrowing grain from relatives, a practice that leaves them in perpetual debt. Frustrated by the lack of meat and the poor quality of their diet, Mai Sui decides she needs a more sustainable source of income. She learns that hunting is a viable option, provided the prey is declared to the village committee for distribution, though keeping small game like rabbits is tolerated.
Mai Sui takes to the mountains and demonstrates her exceptional hunting skills, catching multiple rabbits and stumbling upon a massive wild boar. She constructs a trap to make it appear as though she found the animals rather than hunted them, a precaution to avoid drawing attention to her abilities. When she brings the boar back to the village, it causes a sensation. The village committee, led by Mai Xiangdong, distributes the meat equally among the 318 households. Mai Sui is entitled to a larger share due to her discovery, but she chooses to give most of her rabbits to her uncle as repayment for past debts, a gesture that surprises the villagers and improves her reputation. This act of generosity, combined with her physical prowess, begins to shift the village's perception of her from a helpless fool to a capable, albeit strange, individual.
Despite the meat distribution, Mai Sui is not satisfied with the meager earnings from work points. She learns from her father about the black market, where goods can be bought and sold outside the state-controlled economy. Recognizing the potential for profit, she decides to exploit the black market to secure a steady supply of food and resources. She instructs Mai Laosan and Mai Hongcai to accompany her to the city to scout the location of the market. The father and son, still fearful of Mai Sui's violence, comply with her demands. Meanwhile, Mai Laosan attempts to have a local barefoot doctor examine Mai Sui's brain, hoping to find a medical explanation for her sudden change in personality, but the doctor concludes that her condition is simply worsening. The story follows Mai Sui as she navigates the rigid social structures of 1970s China, using her future knowledge and combat skills to improve her family's standing while concealing her true identity from the authorities and her superstitious neighbors.
