The family possesses a unique survival asset: Jiang Zhi has an innate ability to sense her surroundings like a radar, identifying hostile creatures, valuable items, and radiation levels, which has been crucial to their endurance.

The story begins with the family stranded in the wilderness when their off-road vehicle suffers a catastrophic chassis failure. With fuel depleted and night approaching, they face a critical decision. Jiang Zhi detects fresh droppings from a massive mutated wild boar weighing over a ton, confirming that the area is too dangerous to remain in. Jiang Shan makes the difficult choice to abandon the vehicle, which had served as their primary shelter and transport for years, and proceed on foot toward Ancheng Base, located sixty to seventy kilometers away. The family packs their essential supplies and begins a grueling trek through overgrown, mutated terrain.

During their journey, the family demonstrates their combat proficiency and teamwork. They encounter a mutated tusked rabbit, a creature fast enough to kill an unprepared human with a single bite. Jiang Zhi’s radar ability alerts them to the threat moments before it attacks. The family works in seamless coordination to kill the beast. Upon testing the creature with a salvaged electronic wristwatch detector, they discover a rare anomaly: while most of the rabbit is highly toxic, its heart and kidneys are low-toxin and safe for consumption. This discovery provides them with their first substantial meal in a long time and highlights the extreme value of low-toxin food in the post-apocalyptic economy.

Upon reaching the outskirts of Ancheng Base, the family is awestruck by the massive fortified walls and the advanced security infrastructure, including high-powered floodlights and armed patrols. They join a long line of residents entering the base. Jiang Zhi and Ye Qingyun gather intelligence from a local resident, Auntie Zhu, learning about the base’s social structure, which is divided into districts based on wealth and status, and the existence of "Evolvers," individuals with special abilities who serve in elite exploration teams. The family learns that low-toxin food is a luxury item, costing hundreds of points, and is primarily consumed by the powerful Evolvers.

Inside the base, the family navigates the bureaucratic process of registration. They meet Chen Li, a logistics staff member who is eager to purchase their mutant meat. Jiang Shan and Ye Qingyun sell the rabbit kidneys, earning 288 points, which brings their total family wealth to 658 points. This transaction establishes a crucial connection with Chen Li, who offers to help them retrieve their abandoned vehicle in exchange for first refusal on future sales. The family rents a modest, bare room in a low-cost residential area, marking their first stable shelter in years. Jiang Zhi uses her remaining points to purchase a bone staff from a base store, recognizing its potential as a durable weapon despite its high toxin level, which she plans to mitigate through proper handling.

The narrative establishes the central conflict of survival within a stratified society. The Jiang family must balance their need for resources with the danger of drawing attention.
