The Sweet Little Boss is Actually a Vicious NPC!

Wen Di is a minor boss NPC assigned to the Snow Mountain Inn instance, serving under a powerful, unseen great boss. Tasked with luring players into violating specific taboos to advance the instance, he possesses a system interface that guides his actions. Despite his role as a terrifying innkeeper, Wen Di is physically small, pale, and emotionally sensitive, often blushing and struggling to maintain his menacing facade. He is the widower of Fei Xuyao, the original owner of the inn, and manages the establishment while secretly executing his boss duties in the shadows.

Five players enter the instance: Fu Zhen, the top-ranked player known for his cold and ruthless demeanor; Shen Wangqing, an experienced and calculating player who appears gentle but hides dark intentions; Lu Jieyang, a young and impulsive thrill-seeker; and a couple, Yao Nana and Liu Yajun, who have a volatile and manipulative relationship. Upon meeting Wen Di, Lu Jieyang is immediately captivated by his appearance, disregarding the danger he poses. While the other players view Wen Di with suspicion or indifference, Lu Jieyang persistently pursues him, offering gifts and compliments, which confuses and flusters the NPC.

The core conflict arises from the clash between Wen Di’s mission and his interactions with the players. His primary objective is to drive Yao Nana and Liu Yajun to break taboos through fear and psychological manipulation. He attempts to scare Yao Nana by creating supernatural disturbances, such as dropping marbles on her ceiling to induce paranoia. However, his plans are frequently disrupted by Lu Jieyang, who not only remains unfazed by the scares but also protects Wen Di from the other players’ hostility. When Yao Nana and Liu Yajun disrespect Wen Di by insulting his cooking and accusing him of poisoning their food, Lu Jieyang and Shen Wangqing intervene, creating a complex dynamic where the NPC finds himself defended by the very people he is supposed to torment.

A key turning point occurs when Wen Di hides under Lu Jieyang’s bed after a failed scare attempt. Lu Jieyang discovers him but reacts with curiosity and affection rather than fear, further blurring the lines between NPC and player. Wen Di begins to question Lu Jieyang’s sincerity, suspecting it is a ploy to extract clues, yet he cannot help but feel a strange attachment. The tension escalates during a nighttime team-building activity where the players must roll dice to determine the order of questioning. Fu Zhen, Lu Jieyang, and Shen Wangqing all demonstrate an uncanny ability to control the dice rolls, revealing their high level of experience and possibly hinting at deeper knowledge of the instance mechanics. They compete fiercely for the right to ask Wen Di questions, particularly about his deceased husband, indicating that Fei Xuyao is central to the instance’s mystery.

As the story progresses, Wen Di is forced to navigate the treacherous social landscape of the players. He must balance his duty to the great boss with his growing entanglement with Lu Jieyang. The instance’s lore revolves around a fire thirty years prior that killed a group of reunions, yet the inn remained untouched, suggesting a supernatural protection linked to Fei Xuyao. The players’ investigations into Wen Di’s past and his relationship with his late husband begin to uncover secrets that threaten the stability of the instance. Wen Di’s internal struggle intensifies as he realizes that his emotions are becoming compromised, making him vulnerable to the players’ manipulations. The narrative sets the stage for a confrontation where Wen Di must decide whether to remain loyal to his boss’s cruel games or succumb to the unexpected connections he has formed with the intruders.
