The Sickly Little Wife of the 1980s

Xu Jiaojiao, a thirty-year-old woman who lost her parents and her ability to bear children in a car accident, transmigrates into the body of a sickly young wife in a 1980s Chinese rural setting. She inhabits the role of a minor character in a rebirth novel—a frail woman who marries a soldier named Qin Zhengye solely to help raise his orphaned nephew, Qin Jiashu. The original owner of this body was cruel, neglectful, and abusive toward the three-year-old boy, eventually plotting to sell him. Upon waking in a dilapidated house at the foot of Qingyun Mountain during a bitter winter, Xu Jiaojiao faces immediate survival challenges. She is freezing, starving, and responsible for a terrified child who hides in the firewood shed, expecting abuse. Qin Jiashu’s mother died in childbirth after being abandoned by her husband, and his father, Qin Zhengye, is a stationed soldier who sends monthly financial support. The boy lives under the oppressive care of his grandfather’s new wife, Zhao Guixiang, who starves and mistreats him.

Xu Jiaojiao immediately changes the dynamic, treating Qin Jiashu with kindness and patience. She buys him warm clothes, shoes, and food, and teaches him table manners and social etiquette. Her first major conflict arises when Qin Jiashu, traumatized by past experiences, believes she is preparing to sell him because she is being unusually nice. He breaks down in tears, pleading not to be sold. Xu Jiaojiao reassures him, vowing to raise him as her own son. She also confronts the local bully, Qin Baogui, who steals from and harasses Qin Jiashu, physically defending the child and scaring off the boy’s grandmother, Zhao Guixiang, when she comes to demand retribution.
