Let me just say—the pacing here is deceptively calm. On the surface, we're watching a baby do baby things. He gets fed, he gets sick, he has a banquet. But underneath all of that, the tension is building like a slow-motion car crash and I CANNOT LOOK AWAY. Chapter 1 ends with him realizing he's transmigrated into a book and the fake prince dies in fifteen years. That's a cliffhanger disguised as an epiphany. Chapter 2 starts with him already strategizing—how to survive, how to please the Emperor, how to get a good fiefdom. The transition from panic to calculation is so smooth. The illness scene in the middle of Chapter 1 is a great pacing choice. It raises the stakes immediately—he's a newborn and he's already fighting for his life. The three-day coma creates urgency without needing action scenes. And then he wakes up to hear the Emperor talking about inheritance, which confirms his fears. The full moon banquet in Chapter 3 feels like a breather, but it's actually doing heavy lifting. It shows the political landscape, introduces key characters, and gives us a glimpse of the world beyond the palace walls. The author knows when to pace things slowly and when to accelerate, and right now we're in the calm-before-the-storm phase. I'm already excited for when the real prince returns. That's going to change EVERYTHING.

I've been thinking about this book more than I expected to, and I think there's a really interesting layer beneath what seems like a fluffy transmigration baby story. The jade pendant scene is way more symbolic than it first appears. On the surface, it's a cute baby choosing between mom and dad. But look closer: the Emperor is offering a mutton-fat jade pendant—a symbol of imperial authority, of political power, of the throne itself. The Empress offers imperial green jade beads—also valuable, but personal, wearable, intimate. Yong Cheng'an chooses the pendant (the father's side) but then deliberately rolls back to give it to the Empress. He's not just a baby making a cute choice—he's already learning the game. He's already understanding that everything is transactional, that affection can be managed, that both parents are 'providers' he needs to please. The favorability numbers are another layer of this. The system quantifies something that should be unquantifiable—love between parent and child. And Yong Cheng'an's reaction to the numbers ('Emperor Yong, with your thick eyebrows and big eyes, you act so fond of me, but your favorability is only seventy-three!') reveals the central tension of the whole story: can genuine affection exist when it's being measured, managed, and optimized? Okay, so the dialogue in this book is interesting because our protagonist can't actually speak. He's a baby. So all the 'dialogue' is either internal monologue or other people talking ABOUT him or TO him. And somehow, the author makes this work brilliantly. Yong Cheng'an's internal voice is distinct—he's sarcastic, pragmatic, and occasionally amused by the absurdity of his situation. When he thinks about the milk tasting bitter and realizes it's because the medicine was given to the wet nurse, not the milk itself? That's sharp, observant thinking from a character who's been through life before. His voice feels like someone who's learned to read a room, even when he's just lying there as an infant. The Emperor's dialogue is warm and slightly narcissistic. 'My Crown Prince is truly clever, recognizing people right after birth!' and then laughing about it. That's a man who loves his son but also loves hearing himself be a good father. It's human and funny. The courtiers' dialogue is full of flattery—Xie Xinghuai subtly suggesting the Crown Prince decree is coming soon, praising the baby's future handsomeness. These voices feel distinct from each other. The Empress is gentle and affectionate. Chen Fu the eunuch is efficient and formal. Even in a limited cast, each character has a recognizable way of speaking. And the humor! When Yong Cheng'an knocks over the milk bowl because he's trying to see the Xie father and son, and the Emperor just laughs and says 'Or do you think, in your heart, that I am someone who would hold a grudge against an infant?' 'Fa-fa, bad!' I literally said this out loud when I read it. I'm not even embarrassed. The dialogue in these chapters is so distinctly voiced for each character that I can tell who's speaking without looking at the names. Emperor Yong has this boisterous, slightly performative energy—he's always laughing heartily, always declaring things ('I knew it! An'er likes me the most!'), always trying to win. His dialogue is loud and physical. Even when he's being scolded by the Empress, he recovers with 'Empress, you must have misheard. I said An'er likes both of us the most.' That is such a specific kind of husband energy and I love it. The Empress is quieter but sharper. 'Your Majesty, why bother arguing with a child who understands nothing?'—said with this perfect surface-level sweetness while actually delivering a quiet verbal jab. She plays the long game in her dialogue. And Yong Cheng'an's internal monologue versus his external baby sounds is the real genius here. He's thinking like a full-grown adult—'He had known it would turn out this way'—while externally babbling 'Ah ah!' The contrast between his inner voice and his baby body is where the humor lives, and the author nails it every time. Bai Quan's dialogue is sparse but effective. 'His Highness the Crown Prince just rolled over. I'm checking his bones.' The sheer audacity of saying that with a straight face, and Qiushuang just accepting it—this is comedy gold built on dialogue alone. The one line that absolutely destroyed me was Yong Cheng'an's 'Ma-ma, good!' said much louder than 'Fa-fa, bad.' The hierarchy is established in three words. Three. Words.

What I love is how the author sets up the political landscape in just a few chapters. Prince Xin is the mastermind behind the swap. He's cunning, has spies everywhere, and holds the real prince hostage. That's a lot of world-building compressed into early exposition. The Emperor is doting on the fake prince, which creates dramatic irony—we know the truth but the Emperor doesn't, and that tension is delicious. The full moon banquet scene is a great plot device too. I need to talk about the Empress because OH MY GOD. This woman just gave birth, she's recovering, and the first thing she does is fall completely in love with her son. The scene where she strokes his face and he instinctively nuzzles her finger? I'm not crying, you're crying. That moment where Chunmiao says 'Your Majesty, the Little Highness missed you. See, he stopped crying as soon as he saw you' and the Empress is just absolutely smitten? I felt that. And it's complicated because Yong Cheng'an is a grown man trapped in a baby's body, and he's experiencing this mother's love for the first time in this life. His heart softens. He nuzzles back. It's genuine. The emotional authenticity here is surprising for a transmigration story. But then there's the Emperor, right? The father-son dynamic is already established as warm and affectionate. Emperor Yong is literally feeding the baby milk, blowing on his fingers when he spills it, calling him 'my Crown Prince.' This family is genuinely loving, which makes the eventual betrayal so much more painful. When the truth comes out, it won't just be political—it'll be emotional devastation for everyone. The Xie father and son watching the baby and being moved to tears? That's another layer. These people are already emotionally invested in him, and in the original story, they stay loyal even after the truth is revealed. That's the kind of relationship that's going to break your heart later.
