It was a performance — a fake prayer to cover a real crime. And the Buddha shrine itself, this sacred space in the home, becomes a hiding place for secrets. The author is saying something about how religion and tradition can be weaponized, how the appearance of piety can mask corruption. Then there's the silver powder. Shen Nian finds it on the altar leg — "fine metallic residue left behind after someone hurriedly wiped away packaging." This is the physical trace of deception.
