Yu Yin, a modern woman, finds herself transported into the body of a female supporting character in a redemption-themed period drama set in 1970s rural China. In the original novel, this character is tricked by the reborn female lead, Yu Xiaoqiu, into a marriage swap. Yu Xiaoqiu, having been reborn with knowledge of the future, seeks to steal Yu Yin’s arranged marriage to Chen Maocai, the son of the village secretary, who is destined to become the richest man in the province. Yu Xiaoqiu had previously pushed the original host off a cliff to cover up her own affair with Chen Maocai, leaving the girl for dead. Upon waking in this new body, Yu Yin immediately recognizes the danger and refuses to comply with the swap, shocking Yu Xiaoqiu with her defiance.
The core conflict centers on Yu Yin’s struggle for survival and autonomy against a family that exploits her and a reborn antagonist who believes she holds all the power. Yu Xiaoqiu attempts to force the marriage exchange by promising to provide nourishment, such as malted milk powder, to help Yu Yin recover from her injuries. Yu Yin, however, outmaneuvers her cousin by demanding these conditions publicly and delaying her agreement. During this time, Yu Yin forms an alliance with Zhao Ping’an, a poor, ostracized boy who is the grandson of a former landlord. He becomes her loyal companion and informant, helping her navigate the village’s social dynamics.
A key turning point occurs when Yu Yin learns of Yu Xiaoqiu and Chen Maocai’s secret trysts in the bamboo grove. Rather than confronting them directly, she orchestrates a public exposure. She spreads rumors at the village entrance to incite the curiosity of the local women, leading a large crowd to the bamboo grove where she catches the couple in the act. The village matriarch, Old Lady Chen, who harbors a grudge against the secretary’s family, leads the mob in beating Chen Maocai and capturing Yu Xiaoqiu, bringing the scandal to the attention of the entire village.
The confrontation moves to the village officials, where Secretary Chen Shan attempts to cover up the affair by claiming the marriage swap was legitimate and that Yu Xiaoqiu is now Chen Maocai’s fiancée. Yu Yin counters this by revealing that Yu Xiaoqiu was already pregnant before the push, proving the affair predated any engagement. Faced with the threat of the Revolutionary Committee taking over and damaging the village’s reputation, the officials are forced to negotiate. With the intervention of the respected Grandfather Ye, a settlement is reached: Chen Maocai and Yu Xiaoqiu must publicly apologize, and the Yu family is forced to pay Yu Yin six hundred yuan in compensation, including the dowry she was denied.
The story concludes with Yu Yin securing her freedom and financial restitution. Yu Xiaoqiu is sentenced to clean the public latrines as punishment for her lack of remorse. Yu Yin, having successfully disrupted the original plot, prepares to marry into the provincial capital not as a victim, but as someone who has reclaimed her agency. She promises to bring Zhao Ping’an with her, signaling a shift in their relationship from allies to siblings. The narrative establishes Yu Yin as a strategic and resilient protagonist who uses the gossip and politics of the rural community to defeat her enemies, setting the stage for her rise in the provincial capital.
