The Pretty Military Wife of the 1970s

In the summer of 1976, twenty-year-old Wen Yu traveled for five days from Shanghai to the southwestern borderlands to marry Shao Wenye, a military officer from a prominent cadre family. Their union was an arranged marriage between two families with a shared history of service and sacrifice. A local resident discovered her abandoned belongings and reported the crime to the police, who tracked down the traffickers’ hideout.

He carried her to safety and brought her to the military hospital, where doctors diagnosed a dislocated knee and various superficial wounds. The incident forced Shao Wenye to confront his feelings; he realized that his neglect had driven Wen Yu away and that he could not bear to lose her. He vowed to take responsibility for her, insisting that they were married in the eyes of the community and that he would not let her return to Shanghai. As Wen Yu recovered, Shao Wenye began to change, showing her care and attention, while Xu Wan, recognizing that Shao Wenye’s heart now belonged to Wen Yu, stepped back from the family dynamic.
