Wen Wudi, a skilled Taoist cultivator from an ancient era, dies after being struck by lightning and reincarnates into the body of a young actor who shares his name. The original owner was an aspiring celebrity whose life collapsed after his girlfriend, Lu Lianjia, conspired with others to leak compromising photos of him, leading to his suicide. Upon waking in a modern apartment, Wen Wudi finds himself in a weakened physical state with green hair and no cultivation energy. He discovers a chubby puppy named Lu Ao, who can speak human language and reveals he is actually a human who was transformed into a dog. Wen Wudi decides to use his metaphysical knowledge to clear the original owner's karma and achieve fame in the entertainment industry.
Wen Wudi begins by improving his health through meditation and dietary adjustments, gradually restoring his vitality and appearance. He dyes his hair black and cuts it to resemble his former handsome self. During this time, he encounters Zhang Siyang, a fellow actor who warns him about his exploitative agent, Zhang Xian. Wen Wudi also gains a following on social media under the alias Taoist Lin Shui after exposing a fraudulent fortune-teller, establishing his reputation for accuracy. His life takes a turn when Zhang Xian arranges a meeting with a wealthy producer, Wang Fuyuan, who intends to sexually exploit Wen Wudi in exchange for a role in a popular drama.
Wen Wudi anticipates the trap and brings Lu Ao, who is fitted with a hidden camera, to record the encounter. Inside the private room, Wen Wudi pretends to be intoxicated and compliant while secretly using his energy to neutralize the drugs in his drink. Once alone with Wang Fuyuan, he overpowers the producer, ties him up, and extracts a confession about the conspiracy behind the leaked photos. He also inflicts a specific type of internal injury on Wang Fuyuan that causes immense pain but leaves no external marks, making it untreatable by conventional medicine.
The aftermath sees Wang Fuyuan suffering in the hospital and Zhang Xian beaten by Wang's bodyguards in retaliation. Wen Wudi returns home, continuing his routine of cultivation and acting preparation. He maintains a calm demeanor while Lu Ao complains about his treatment as a pet. The story sets the stage for Wen Wudi to navigate the entertainment industry with his newfound clarity and supernatural abilities, while seeking to uncover the full extent of the conspiracy against the original owner.
